    Here's something to think about. France has had its ups and downs, militarily. All the ups, however, have not been led by men from France. I think Charlemagne was a Frank, and William of Normandy was really a Viking (think about it- Normandy, Norman, Northman, Norse). Even Napoleon, who led France to its greatest heights of victory, was from Corsica. Once he became the head honcho and moved to Paris, his tactics became less and less refined, and he eventually decided that invading Russia in the winter would be a good idea.

    My favorites on the down side of French military history are:

    Dien Bien Phu- We will build our fortress in this scenic valley, there's no way they could get artillery up on the hills.

    The Maginot line- Hey, you dirty Germans, you can't cut around the line like that! What? We can't turn the guns around?

    WW II: France fortifies it's German border. Germans invade through Belgium.
