Jump Point Effects

What do you guys think of the new ones??

Nice little design change there

lol, maybe that's what will become one of B5's things - having slightly different jump points for each spin-off lol

i loved the way they looked in crusade and ACTA perfection. cant really see it well in rangers yet but im sure itll be nice.

I thought the ones in Crusade were great.

• lol, they are all good though eh. Jump Points are just a cool invention in the B5 universe.........and hyperspace

But its a different type of ftl (faster than light)travel, that beats what any other Sci-fi (genre, not the channel) shows have.

I refer to Thirdspace for an analysis of how B5 hyperspace differs from other shows.
• BigglesBiggles The Man Without a Face
Most other shows use some form of great incredible drive tech that pushes them along at faster than light speeds. Very few rely on ships that can never, ever travel faster than light and in most cases are actually very slow and so rely on Hyperspace, where time works differently. Another thing is that few shows have this tech as something that noone knows who discovered it.

• Biggles, correct me if I am wrong (a trekkie I am not), but don't ST ships sort of push themselves halfway into sub(hyper)space? I'm pretty sure they don't actually break that particular natural law like SW ships.

As to the new jumppoints, I'll wait until I can get a better look.
• Alec MAlec M Award Winning Poster
Star Trek ships physically distort space around the ship, changing the law of physics and allowing the ship to travel "faster than light". That's why it's called Warp drive, because it warps space.

Also, there are some guys at NASA who are now saying that this kind of thing might actually be possible in some form.

They have been saying that for a while, The physics behind it are sound, but they have no idea how to create a device that would warp space. or if you prefer a Dune term instead of a Trek term, Fold space. same principals really.

• BigglesBiggles The Man Without a Face
This is why they call it "subspace". It is sort of not-quite space.
I found the term for another kind of space warping used in one Voyager episode quite amusing. "Hyper-sub-space". Wouldn't that be just normal space?

I read the first two dune books and it sounds to me that the navigators don't fold space. They just navigate the ship past all the obstacles that they pass at high speed. Do they state otherwise anywhere.
• eamonmcaeamonmca Earthforce Officer
Thats exactly it.
They use the spice (eat it) to increase their telepathic abilities so that they can predict safe paths through space.

Without it its impossible to go FTL safely. You would fly through something before your 'scanners' would pick it up, since you would fly faster than the scanner signals.

Yep. And that is why without the spice, interstella travel at FTL speeds is impossible. Kinda like an L-unit I guess.

Out of curiosity... what is the Farscape method of FTL travel? And don't say "Starburst," 'cause that ain't it.

• Its called Hetch Drive. No clue how it works, but you're still in normal space (or at least appear to be).

I do believe it is Hetch drive. You do not remain in normal space, though. It is a layer between dimensions. This was learned in the episode in which moya got stuck mud-starburst.

speaking of jump points... can someone get me a decent screen cap of an "arriving" jump point ?

The slipstream in Andromeda was "invented" by a very ancient race, to which the younger races were introduced. Also the stargates in Stargate.

I guess the best way to think of a "warp drive" is to think of the ship, in a bubble. The ship itself never really moves and remains pretty much stationary inside the bubble. It's the bubble that breaks the laws of physics and goes faster than the speed of light. At least, that's the only way I can rationalize it in relation to things like the Theory of Relativity. Kinda their way of circumventing the rules/theories in Einstein's work.

They'll probably explain the change in effects in LOTR. Could be a faster jump engine or something..

Warp drive 'bubbles'. Reminds me of the "Heisenberg compensator" for transporters. That was a laws-of-physics-getout if ever I heard one.

• BigglesBiggles The Man Without a Face
That's how they work, yes. The warp nacelles form a bubble around the ship that distorts space/time, allowing the ship to travel faster than light.

No, I don't think so. The new effects are simply new sfx......it is a new show, it has nothing to do with technology changing
• BigglesBiggles The Man Without a Face
That's how it was with Crusade. The new points were simply a result of a bigger FX budget.
