I remember that. That was made a few years ago, wasn't it? I never actually saw any of it, but Mainframe do make some pretty cool stuff.

Hey, did you see this little tidbit of info on that page, SB?

Even the link is .co.nz. What planet do these people live on? :D

yep. losing that contract to Mainframe is what killed Foundation Imaging for the most part.

On the lighter side, are you suggesting that Mainframe needs a TRON-job?

The Heavy Gear show was terrible. They basically turned the show into an 1-on-1 arena-battle like Robot Jox, and it wasn't even THAT good.

If I remember correctly, the main character was a teenager who helped one particular team repair their robot.

Foundation Imaging could have done a better job on the CGI (their promo reel they did in the bid for the show was much more realistic -- I don't think Mainframe used motion blur in their CGI if I remember correctly), but maybe Mainframe just had some tight deadlines.

Either way, the show itself was boring.

Just like the Starship Troopers series (Roughnecks: Starship Troopers Chronicles)", Heavy Gear was aimed at a young audience (8-13). But unlike Roughnecks, Heavy Gear was an unsophisticated show with a jeuvanile plot.

Basically, the show followed two mech teams, the Vanguard of Justice (bad guys) and the Shadow Dragons (good guys), and the distinction between good and evil was drawn with childlike clarity. The villains couldn't have been more obvious if they were wearing black hats.

    Terrible.

I'm sure that if Mainframe -- or even Sony -- had had control over the story, it would have been much better. But this time, the networks demanded the show be made the way they wanted, and it sucked.

I should probably see it for myself....

but, it's suprising how they can mess something like that up so much when it has some REALLY good source material to back it up...

that sucks... cos if you know anything about the Heavy Gear universe you know its a damned good one.. what a damned shame...

I cant remember how many good times I had playing the paper and dice RPG version of this universe... good stuff...

the game kicks ass, and the show was a pitty, since there was soo much good stuff in the HG universe to play with, hell, I think we need somebody in Japan to do the show, god knows they wouldnt shy away from graphic depictions of the Second Inter Polar war, or the destruction of Peace River and the return of the Westphalia Cabinet.

gah! the plot line cries out for a decent show!

    Well... does SONY count?

They were the ones who hired FI to do Roughneck's, and who turned around and hired Mainframe to do Heavy Gear...

That was probable Sony's american division. If Sony Japan had been in charge of it, it would have been made in Japan, been anime, been in japanese, and been fucking good.
