Utes = name of the athletic teams at the University of Utah

Hmmm, thats a little strange, like an El Camino taken to the next level.

Acutally I have a great deal of respect to the Australian made cars, such as the Ford Falcon and the Holden Commodore. At least the Aussies didn't let fwd become the standard platform (as the US did in the late 80s and early 90s).

Anyway its Holden thats bringing us the new Pontiac GTO.

YEA!!!! I'm a UTE!!! I swam for them (Division I). The football team is lame - the current swim coach is a jerk. Mens Basketball, women's soccer, gymnastics and volleyball are damn good though.

A Ute is also a native american indian.

Beat BYU!!! (Trivia - Did you know the code at byu doesn't allow women to wear the strap of their purse or other bag over their shoulder and across their chest because it makes their cleavage more obvious! Mormons )

As far as the car goes - I think I like the looks of the statesman's front end better (rear is ugly).

My question is: are these things really built in Australia - or is it all done in Korea or some other SE Asian country?

I was thinking more along the lines of the Subaru Brat from the Early 80s...

I just realized the image rotates. When I looked at it first, it was the One Tonner, a El Camino with a stake-side flatbed. The second time was the Storm, which is the Brat look-alike.

So does make for an interesting conversation though, with everyone seeing a different image.

Utes are very very common in Australia and NZ (don't know about the rest of the world, but I gather they're not particularly common). "Ute" is short for utility vehicle and is the generic term for any vehicle that has a car's (not truck's) front and a flatbed back like the ones you see in the picture. They're used by farmers, builders, plumbers, electricians, in fact pretty much anyone who does physical work and needs to carry a lot of stuff around.

Also, Utes and Wagons are far more practical than many pick-ups and SUVs for doing what they do, therefore, they rock.

You're comparing a Practical sports coupe to an over-the-top street-legal supercar :D Shame on you!

As punishment, I demand one of each.

In blue. With white stripes on the GT. Come on, get crackin'!

Truth be told, I'm in love with the GT. Problem is, it's made by Ford.

Yeah, but this is like buying a corvette. Hand made, tuned, and certified.

The original GT40 was sweet...this looks to "hold the line."

Blue??!?!?!

Surely you meant SILVER. ;)

No, he actually meant to say green.

The Ute looks a lot bigger and meaner IRL...

and you cant argue with 5.7L of LS1 corvette derived donk... 6 speed and righteous RWD...

the Utes run a very slightly detuned version of what you'll find in the new GTO... they are basically the same floorpan

all for about $26,500 USD

btw Rick.... the looks of the GTO suck for one major reason... development cost of the RHD to LHD conversion, stupid aggressive oversize American airbags and such didnt leave much left in the kitty for styling... therefore... it has a rather bad Pontiac nose grafted on...

mind you... the shot you have there in the thread is crap... the Monaro(GTO) is very sexy in the flesh...

and the HSV version... (look for linx on the Holden site).... one brand new word for you...

'roadgasm'

Looks or no looks, its still a 300 hp V-8 in a Rwd congifuration. A much more positive step by GM then they have been taking of late.

Correction: 350 hp. :D

I do agree however, they could have done a little better job in the design department. But they're adding hood scoops to the GOAT in 2005 and there's a rumor that there will be a "Judge" version sometime in the next few years.
• SanfamSanfam I like clocks.
No doubt it'll be revised in the near future. And a judge model has been hinted at more than a few times...
