• Just plain stupid. I don't think they even try to win anything. They are just teasing people.

And the so called copy protection is the answer to all our problems, yeah right.

When everyone else knows that copy protection doesn't work the big and stupid bosses just think "copy protection? It sound more money for us! Let's do it!"

What this does do is make a whole lot of p2p users nervous, in some cases far enough to make them stop sharing music. Which is what the RIAA wants.

I was telling my buds today, as a consumer I like to do the right thing. If I hear some music in MP3 form I really like and know of a CD from that band that contains many such songs, I'm usually more than willing to spend the $15 to purchase their CD. Even though a tiny fraction of that goes to the artists, it's better than nothing.

But, on the other hand, the RIAA really pisses me off. Not only is the majority of that $15 funneled right into corporations, but it goes to fund these craptacular ad campaigns and powerful lobbies that want to destroy how I learned of the music in the first place. If only I knew how to send money directly to the artists rather than all of these corporate middlemen.

The RIAA is ticked because of multiple reasons. One, the "single" is dead as we know it. As if it ever stood a chance - who wants to pay $7 to hear one song? Two, prissy cookie-cutter bands can't survive because they can no longer sell the CD that contains one good song and loads of filler. God forbid. And three, the veil has been lifted from the eyes of consumers. Before the Internet, I can't tell you how much money I spent on stupid CDs I thought would be cool, but weren't. Now we'll all informed - and frankly, that scares them.[/quote]

Isn't there something about filing that many law suits ?

How's that going to make the Judicial system feel about it?

Extra work...

hmmm...

They're just pissed because of the recent settlement on the bloated price of CD's and that millions will be getting a ~$14 refund check...

I don't think the RIAA is necessarily scared or pissed. I just think they're using the lawsuits as a scare tactic to try to get people to not use p2p.
• A2597A2597 Fanboy
saw that on /. yesterday.

Not at all worried. What bothers me is how do they know how many MP3s a person has?

do they acually use the "Search for other files from this person" on EVERY kazaa user? heh
• BigglesBiggles The Man Without a Face
Hah! :D

If there's a real reason why CD sales are dropping, it's because the price is too high and people don't want to spend that much money they know is crap, unlike before the advent of P2P programs where they spent it because they didn't hear the music first and had to buy the CD to try it.

I wonder how long it will be untill RIAA's site is hacked. It usually get's hacked when they try something new to stop p2p.

I read on RIAA's site that they have tried to put up music online where you can download it for a fee (not free). I'm pritty sure you need a credit card for that and where am I supoused to get a credit card from?

I have to agree whit CurZ that RIAA is trying to frighten people!

Music sales are dropping because the prizes are RIDICULOUS and because most of the music on the markets is pure crap what people don't want to buy. Like mentioned, often there's 1-2 good songs on the record and the rest is crap. Nobody wants to buy a cd like that. Nobody wants to pay a price of a full cd of music when there's only 1-2 "hit" songs, that last a few weeks on top of the charts and after that nobody remembers that those even existed, on that record they really want to get and listen to.

Also there's a HUGE oversupply of music on the markets nowadays, so the record companies are not getting "enough" money in comparison with that and they have to get more money from somewhere. Maybe they think they can get more money by suing people and by raising the prices of the records more and more. Haha....

When are they going to learn, that they can never win this war.

A few hints to the record industry: Stop producing and releasing so much crap and lower the prices of the records by at least 50% so that people could actually afford to buy them! You might just notice the business getting better. And give bigger percentage to the artists!

Thing is, if they put as much effort into going with the flow instead of fighting it, they could easily make a killing. Apple's iTunes service proves this. They sold like $5 million worth of songs in like a month or two. Like it or not, the genie is out of the bottle. People aren't going to stop downloading music just because you (the RIAA) don't like it. Its easy to download media files for free, and software to do it has become widely available. The genie is out of the bottle folks. Fighting it isn't going to work. The MPAA's fight against the VCR, DVD-R and the like didn't win, just as the fight against the CD-R and cassette tape didn't work, just as the fight against this won't work. They're only making matters worse for themselves by alienating the very customers they think they're serving. Right now, is it piracy? Sure. I don't argue that. However, we're sending a message to them that we can get what we want for free, and it scares them. We don't have to buy a CD for $15 - 20 with one or two songs that we like and the rest being garbage. We find what we want for free, burn them to CD and use whenever we please. Unless they can find something to counter that, then they're only pissing off the few people (by comparison) that buy music legitimately.

Ohh, you know them. They like to take their sweet time doing what they're being made to do, but the second you do something to them......they want money from you NOW.

I agree! But let's skip the PIG part and just BIU. It's so much cheaper and less labour intensive.

Yes. Less painting, more blowing up.
• SanfamSanfam I like clocks.
Well, apple has iTunes 4, which I'm very fond of. It's just the thing. Good music at cheap prices. And free to share.
