Did you everwonder why...

FreejackFreejack Jake the Not-so-Wise
...on sci-fi shows, power actuated doors just seem to know when to open and when not to?

How 'bout others?

Jake

Actually, those doors at super markets always open JUST after you have to stop becuase you are about to run into them.

This has to be some sort of conspiracy...

On the underpass at university, one of the doors sometimes closes when people approach it.

if i think about some of the people who are going to university here, that sounds like the right thing to do for a door...

I remember a short film by Rich Hall (one of the original cast of HBO's "Not Necessarily the News", and creator of Sniglets), where he stole the mat that you step on to activate the supermarket doors (before most businesses started using the overhead sensors).

He would drop the mat on the floor in front of anything with a door, and it would open. Then he ended up cutting out part of the mat and gluing the material to the bottom of his shoes, and everything he walked by would open (including car trunks, bank ATMs, etc.).

Funny stuff.

Do you want that with or without the million and one lawsuits for door injuries? ;)
• BigglesBiggles The Man Without a Face
I had this discussion with someone else a few weeks ago regarding some new automatic, single-pane glass doors at university. They move very slowly, but the conclusion we came to was that if they were setup to move faster the chances of slicing someone up were quite high, plus you don't really want to very large pieces of glass slamming together at high speed.

heh, I was just worried about random swinging doors hitting people, but if they arent that heavy, and their actuators are not that strong we dont have anything to worry about!

í don't remember seeing doors that don't ;)

Here's one I wondered about, all the doors to crew quaters on B5 open by swinging up into the wall, while the door to G'kar's quarters slides horizontally into the wall? I wonder why that is?

Jake
• David of MacDavid of Mac Elite Ranger Ca
There are a couple of doors like that. The one in Security is horizontal, and I think the one in the Observation dome is, too.
• bobobobo (A monkey)
Hmm, purely speculation, but the door could be configured such that if power is lost, it will swing shut by centripetal acceleration (not gravity). For the 'more important' people and places, redundant mechanisms would be in place to ensure the door shut, so there is no need to swing down. Also for the observation dome, which is closer to the axis of the station, there might not be enough centripetal acceleration to close a heavy door.

All conjecture.
• SanfamSanfam I like clocks.
Also, perhaps being built around a single joint would make reliability that much higher when compared to, say, a horizontal sliding door, where you'd have to have top and botom rollers/hinges/frames, etc.

The doors at security and C&C are different than the crew quarter doors in that they are two piece doors that close together.

G'kar's door is indentical to the other ambassidor's and crews, but yet it opens sideways?

The CnC door is a single door. It's medlab that has a double door.
