FirstOnes Merchandise? (Cafe Press)
I was tinkering around with some Cafe Press stuff (some preliminary random stuff is here), and I was thinking of taking the Aardvark logo I did a while back and turning it into a FirstOnes T-shirt.....
That got me to thinking.... would anyone be interested in buying FirstOnes stuff from Cafe Press? It could be set up so that a dollar or two of the cost of each item could go directly to paying for the FirstOnes hosting fees....
Whaddya think?
Obviously that kind of thing isn't going to create a continuous inflow of cash; most likely, if anyone is interested, most of the stuff would be purchased immediately, and then purchases would die down.
But I think it's a good alternative to just asking for donations....

Wait a second...
i want to pimp our shit out for the world to see!
The only high-quality logo I have is the Green Aardvark, so I decided to use that.
The downside is that you can only have one of each type of merchandise in the shop at a time. I wanted to do matching shirts/mugs with a purple version of the Aardvark, but I can't add both.
If interest is high, I'll probably create another shop called firstonespurple that will have duplicate versions of the same merchandise, only with a purple aardvark.
Looks good! Can you post a larger version of the front and back logos here?
Sure. Here's the logo I used for all of them. The original image is twice this size. The same logo is used on the back of the shirts, but without the text.
The image used here is a JPG, but the original is a PNG.
That 'lil guy cracks me up to no end. :)
Any chance you could get the one with the beer/soda hat up?

Hmm...possibly. Any particular product you'd want that on (keep in mind that I'd have to create another store in order to use items I've already made)?
Well, I think a T-Shirt would be nifty. Although the ultimate irony would come in the form of a can insulator or a hat. :P
Well, I used up the T-shirts on the other design...but I did add a frosted mug and a beer stein, plus a long-sleeve t-shirt.
ok maybe i am stupid but what is that green kangaroo got to do with the site?:)
It's an Aardvark. Long story, but here goes (this was copied from another forum where I was explaining what my avatar meant):
I'm a member of the staff at FirstOnes.com, a site that was created back in 1998 during production of the Babylon 5 combat sim game, "Babylon 5: Into the Fire". During the game's development, the developers would frequently post on the forums answering questions about the game.
When they were asked questions they couldn't answer (usually regarding game elements they couldn't reveal at the time), they would give a short cryptic or nonsense answer. One common answer they used was "Aardvark!".
There was an episode of Babylon 5 which dealth with an alien race (the Drazi) who split their population into two factions and fought for political control of their government. The two factions were represented by green and purple sashes. So "Green!" vs "Purple!" were often seen popping up in the forums for no reason at all.
Many of these references became in-jokes at the forums, and many of them melded together; so it wasn't uncommong to see someone mentioning green and purple aardvarks.
So that's the origin of the green aardvark... but as for the rocket-powered aardvark...
One particular member of the FirstOnes forums was an FX guy who worked on the special effects for the B5 TV movie "Legend of the Rangers". During production of the show, he was tasked with coming up with some "wing art" for Starfuries (the one-man fighters that are well known on the show). Wing art for a Starfury was much like nose art on a WWII bomber. He had asked the members of the FirstOnes forums for wing art ideas/designs that he might be able to include in the show if it ever became a series ("Legend of the Rangers" was a pilot movie that was the possible launching pad for a future series).
The design I came up with was the one picked for use, although unfortunately, the series was never picked up.
The original wing art desing had the green rocket-powered aardvark wearin boxing gloves, inside a red circle. Around the perimeter of the circle was the Starfury squadron designation: FO-111
The FO stood for "First Ones", and the 111 was a reference to the modern day fighter jet, the F-111, which was named the Aardvark (seemed fitting).
I figured that a rocket-powered boxing Aardvark was very nose-art-ish, and the design seemed to harken back to the WWII era nose art concepts...
So eventually, if the Legend of the Rangers had become a series, it would have been cool to see my design on the show...but alas that didn't happen. Oh well.... Since making the original design, I've updated and improved it, and it's sort of become my avatar here and over at the official Tribes 2 forum.
ok its strange but it is cool.
dont know.. i just like a B5 logo personaly - but as i said - that is cool:)
i think we might want to work on the actual font ..
funny how something like that has such a logical reason :)

A B5 logo would be nice, but Cafe Press doesn't allow using copyrighted images unless the copyright is held by the store owner. That's why I stuck with something I had created myself.
The font I used is the Serpentine Bold font, which is the same one used for the Babylon 5 title text. But if anyone wants to design something, feel free... This is only a test. :)
can one go ahead and order a t-shirt on that site? is that site all ready to take orders?
as i am going to get a few :)
ok good work man. i looked at it again and i am startting to like it alot.

Thanks. :)
Yeah, you can place orders any time. Most of the items there will apply 1$ or $2 to the FirstOnes fund.
Cafe Press gets money from the base price, and anything that I mark up is profit. Most of the items are $1 or $2 above the base price, and that will go to Sanfam.
nice one man:)
maybe a link on top of the board on all pages as well .. to get the word out
hey : why not email everyone who is registered and let them know about the shop? i think its really cool!
Though I just realized that it is kinda odd having merchandise that doesn't fit the site design at all. :D
Worf
Now if only we could get that logo onto the tail of a Boeing 747.... :p
I hate paying tax on imported stuff

That would be so fucking cool. :D
Shame they use DHL for international orders, as they'll declare everything at customs :(

Oh boo hoo....
Pay the bloody tax.
