Is anyone else hooked on anti-aliased fonts?

CurZCurZ Resident Hippy
I don't know if anyone else has experienced this, but after the anti-aliased fonts in Linux and XP's ClearType, I can't stand to look at regular, jagged fonts.. they're so.. jagged :p

I use them in both XP and Mandrake 9.1. They look so nice. :) I think the Mandrake 9.1 ones look better.

thats why I love Flash, I can make PC sods use antialiased fonts of MY choice, kerning, weight and style and theres shit anyone can do about it... so my designs remain true to what I intended.... the web is such a rude crude and ugly place for the most part... arial and all the other typographic impostors and the appalling way html and so forth display characters often makes me very ill....

oh... and buy a Mac... they STILL rock very hard when it comes to Typography...
• BigglesBiggles The Man Without a Face
Yes, that they do. In fact, anything to do with desktop publishing.

Thats what I must be! I just reformatted and now the fonts look like crap. How exactly do you turn them on (I'm on XP Home)
• I had it on my PDA, but didn't know XP had it...

Rhett: Control Panel>Display>Appearance>Effects>Something or other about font appearance.

Display properties -> Appearance -> Effects -> second item from the top, check the box and select ClearType from the drop-down menu.

Thank you. I will give it a shot next time I am down at my dads.

Cleartype = teh own!

Especially if you're using an LCD monitor. Thats where it REALLY shines.

How had I missed this? Everything looks so nice now! I wonder what this affects as far as games go....
• BigglesBiggles The Man Without a Face
Nothing, unless the game uses the Windows font system to draw its text. Most games don't, they render their own text using textures.
• RhettRhett (Not even a monkey)
Ahh, this is really nice. MAkes things look a little thicker though. Might take some time to get used to... But it fixed the blurring problem I had.
• RhettRhett (Not even a monkey)
Never mind- it didnt fix my problems. Everything still looks kinda blured. I cant really explain it. Anyone have any suggestions?

Your monitor is out of focus?

If you feel like adjusting it, simply unplug the monitor, take the back off, and adjust the small focus knob you find inside. And be careful not to touch anything else or it'll zap you like a Vorlon!
• C_MonC_Mon A Genuine Sucker
And how Biggles do you know it will ZAP??? Tried it??? :D
• RhettRhett (Not even a monkey)
I can't imagine how it would have gotton out of focus- it was just after a reformat when things started looking weird.
• BigglesBiggles The Man Without a Face
Most monitors gradually drift in focus.

If you think it was the format that did it, perform another one. :)
• RhettRhett (Not even a monkey)
The first one was enough a pain in the ass. I guess I will give that a shot (if I blow up the monitor- Ill probably be shot and wont be around here anymore :D )

Or you can simply use a long screwdriver to discharge the tube.
• RhettRhett (Not even a monkey)
I dont think my monitor allows easy access (at least from what I have found). Any other suggestions?

I think that's *really* bad advice. The charge in the tube can be *incredibly* high. a long screwdriver wouldn't be the safe way to do it.

Actually Sanfam, that IS how it's done...

Long Screwdriver, and an even longer aligator clip wire to ground...

;)
• BigglesBiggles The Man Without a Face
They're right, Sanfam. But I wouldn't recommend it to amateurs. :)

heh.

I've just been zapped one too many times to attempt that myself, I guess... :P
• RhettRhett (Not even a monkey)
So how do I do this if I can't open up the back of the monitor (there is no way that I have found)?

There should be screws all around the outside track of the back of the monitor. Atleast 4 - 6 screws total. You may have to remove the screws holding your monitor's power supply to the case as well. (usually just two) Then give it a good yank and it should come right off.

Make sure the screen is facing the ground when you do this.
