  • The Stingers the Afganies have are all at least 10 years old, and on top of that, there was quite a few problems with the Block0 missiles. Some flaws exists in Stingers even today in the Block1, because of cut backs to programs trying to fix the problems.

I'm not saying that the Stingers are useless, but they're not nearly as good as people automatically think. Besides the Stingers, the Afganies also have a number of captured Soviet missiles, in the form of SA-7 Grail and such (which was actually shown being operated by Bin Laden on TV). Despite all this, it's almost certain that the AC-130s will be supporting any ground operations. I just hope that their new ECM additions holds up.

Ah, the infamous "Spectre".. I would hate to be on the recieving end of one of those things.. *shudders*

On another note. To those that are saying "it's going to be messy". Problem is, it's already messy, ask anyone in the new york area. The question is, how much messier are we going to allow it to get. If we commit the troops and root out this source of terrorism, we stand to loose a good number of people, however that number is potentially smaller than the number of people we could loose to terrorism from this asshole, and those that think they can get away with it too. Truth be told, I think the reason we are only acting now is because we are the US. Almost any other country would have probably blown him and everyone around him back to the stone age.

I'm going to stop now before I start ranting. Bear this in mind though. It's no longer a question of if we should act. It's a question of where and how we should act. This kind of attack on the US as a people cannot go unanswered. To sit back and do nothing is to invite others to do it to us as well. We MUST act.

It's determining how to act that is the problem.

Regarding ground troops: If actual ground troops rather than special forces are sent in, it will get far more messy than New York. Afghanistan is a horrible place to fight a war. It's very mountainous, there are very few roads in the mountains, machinery has a tendancy to breakdown from heat or cold or dust or...

Biggles, you missed the point. By doing nothing, we invite more terrorism. And yes, it may be messier than NY, but how many CIVILIANS have to die before action is warented? I don't know about you but I would rather send in soldiers who have already pledged an oath to defend this country with their lives than to allow innocent civilians be slaughtered at the whim of these people. Enough is enough already.

I think we are all in agreement, this will not be easy, I'm just not sure we are ready for how hard it could get.

I am hoping that this will be not just a campaign against Bin Laden, or the Taliban, but all terrorism.
