Alternative/Independent News

SanfamSanfam I like clocks.
I've been growing so sick and tired of the almost sports-like coverage of events in the middle east--nay, the world, so I began to dig up my old list of alternative news sources, only to remember it was lost in a format a few months ago.

The only problem I've really had with sources like these, though, is the prevalence of, quite frankly, complete and utter shit in a number of places, but there's also quite a few gems hidden in there, too (and they are what make it worth reading).

Anybody have any others?

I like the BBC news sites as well.
  • www.washingtonpost.com I think it's a great international news source compared to other US papers. However it is often biased toward the people in power inside the Beltway, strangely the editorials are almost always liberal in bias.

www.wsj.com Some people think it has a conservative bias - they might be right - but I find it to be a fair source especially when it comes to business news - just ignore the political stuff.

http://www.economist.com They used to be a great Economics journal that wrote on a very high grade level, they slipped and are now just another international magazine with average writing. (Yes, I read better than I write. ) Everything in this Magazine has a European flavor and often falls back to British colonial views when covering Africa and "the East Indies."

http://straitstimes.asia1.com.sg Because Island South East Asia is an area of the world we should watch that all of the west - Europe too - forgets about. They have a local bias and you have to understand Singapore's relation to the area to understand but it does well - they DO NOT represent thoughts of the Malay or Muslim populations in the region - it's like reading an non government controlled Chinese newspaper with a wealthy island/Singapore perspective.

http://business-times.asia1.com.sg Same as above - but more business oriented.

http://www.deutschewelle.de/english The German portion is far more in depth if you can read German. Why read it? Well, let's face it whether the rest of Europe knows it or not Germany runs the EU.

I have to put in a vote for Reuters. Also, Google News, while not a news source in itself, lists all news sources, not just the major ones. So you can usually find more indepent sources carrying a story rather than having to rely on something like CNN or the BBC.

Thanks, Konrad! I'll be sure to add 'em to the list.

And google news is one of my favorite places to go. Wonderful resource. :)
