Land of the setting sun

SanfamSanfam I like clocks.
There was a really interesting combination of weather and lighting a few days ago. My mother called me while on her way out telling me to "get to the causeway ASAP".

So I went there, and got a bunch of photos. Here's a sample.

There are quite a few examples of almsot surreal lighting. The clouds, combined with the fog and remaining ice and snow from the previously sub-zero weather provided an incredible atmosphere.

At some points, it almost looked as if the gates of hell had opened. While the cameras amazed me with their results, there was so much that was out of gamut or just beyond the CCDs capabilities. I'm really sad the sony ran out of memory, though. It excels in the area of color and contrast.

Anyhoo, enough talking. Here's the stuff. :)

    Nice shots. :)

we VERY rarely see stuff like that...fog is always morning, and the sun rises behind us, sets over the lake..oh well...

    shot two is excellent...

and this is coming from a guy with a rather jaded and rarified taste for images.

    well done Sanfam

buy a large format chemical camera and put alot of professional photographers to shame mate. You have the EYE.

six and seven are sexy but in need of a weeny bit of cropping...

eight would be mind blowing with a strong vertical crop...zinging off the left 25% would make it a very powerful image

ten is lovely... though the bollard pointing up needs to be off centre, maybe moving the boat would have helped so you could get all the boat and have the strong vertical of the bollard to the right edge of the frame... or maybe even crop the boat so it provides a nice pointy shape to point at the bit of interesting shoreline in the left of frame

always remember that you should try not to have any more than perhaps four or five things in a frame... and try an give them all a distinct precedence. Frintance with this frame, sunset is precedent, water next, coastline next, boat next or bollard next... you should try to never have two objects/patches of light. shade/contrast in competition with each other.

balance is good too... balances between textures... smooth against rough, white against black, yellow against purple etc etc etc...

the tilted camera is doing you no favours either... with shot 11.. if you wanted diagonals.. get real close to to one of those frame rails and let it run diagonally in the frame due to perspective. tilted cameras are for very specific and often 'artsy' shots, and it is very easy to fuck them up. It's often best to leave the viewer with atleast on frame of reference in the shot, ie a 'flat floor' unless of course you want to make the viewer uncomfortable...

all in all mate... you have talent very much worth polishing...

Very good pics...I also have a sony digicam, and am amazed at the sharpness contrast and color I get from it...even in the middle of the day at the grand canyon, which is a hard time to pick up colors from the rocks it did an excellent job..and in maco mode you can get some great shots of things..

I'm stuck in a decision now.

For the camera to replace the Nikon and superscede the Sony, I've narrowed the selection down to the Sony F717 and Canon Powershot G3.

I can't decide now. Both have great lenses and great features. Hell, price isn't even a huge issue with me. If I sell all of my nikon-specific accessories, I can easily afford the F717. The benefit of the G3, though, is that it uses Compact Flash, instead of memory stick, which is *much* cheaper and faster. But then again, I have both mediums, and find the memory sticks to also have a number of plusses (small size, easy removal, equally durable when compared to CF).

It's basically down to which camera can kick more ass, but I'm not sure.

    Edit: Sweet Jebus!
Canon just announced a new SLR: The 10D. MSRP of $2000, retail price estimated around $1450.

Damnit. Another wrench in the works.

    go canon...

Well, I've tried both the F717 and G3, and it just makes for a tough decision. Each camera has a number of plusses that would benefit my normal usage, which includes a lot of night and low-light shooting. I also love colors. Both of these cameras excel in color processing.

And then there's the SLR. :P

WHY MUST THIS BE SO HARD?
Although the SLR will be damn hard on the wallet. Ouch! $1500 without the glass. Pretty cheap for a digital, but still relatively expensve.
