A Genuine Sucker
in Zocalo v2.0
OK! I'm new to Linux so I don't know the correct words for every thing.
I got Mandraken 9.0 Linux installed on my comp and when I try to update my GF ti-4400 driver Mandraken won't boot proporly. The system is left in command mode. Can someone please tell me how to update the drivers proporly?

I dont know of the newer versions but did you try XF86Setup on the command line? If you can access that you can at least fire up KDE using an older set of Nvidia drivers.
Its been awhile since I have configured KDE on a Linux box, I usually set them up as file servers or print servers, and just run from the command line. Call me old school....:)
LOL
If you want to get to X windows, type startx in the command shell.
You running KDE?

I'd reccomend Gnome and either Enlightenment or sawfish instead of KDE, Gnome2 is really nice
Is Redhat better than Mandraken? I just thought that perhaps redhat won't have the same problem!
IMO SuSe is the best. YAST is the best config tool out there.
knowing my luck it's something stupid and I should have been able to figure it out, oh well
- Download nVidia's Linux Detonator Drives after finding out which one to use: ftp://download1.nvidia.com/XFree86_40/1.0-4191/NVchooser.sh - make sure you set this as a script file with chmod or it won't work. The download from nVidia is here: http://www.nvidia.com/view.asp?IO=linux_display_ia32_1.0-4191
- Install the drives
- Then MANUALLY edit your X86 config file - the instructions are on nVidia's website same spot you download them from - its in the readme file - this section "(sec-03) EDITING YOUR XF86CONFIG FILE" - if you don't do this, X86 WILL crash on load. (I'm pasting this below)
If you still have a problem with X86 crashing, it could be the AGP apeture driver.
- Add this line to the XF86CONFIG file in I believe the same location nVidia had you change the Module data at: "NvAGP = 1"
This will force it to use nVidia's AGP apeture driver instead of XF86's built in AGP apeture driver which occasionally doesn't work.

(sec-03) EDITING YOUR XF86CONFIG FILE
__________________________________________________________________________
When XFree86 4.0 was released, it used a slightly different XF86Config
file syntax than the 3.x series did, and so to allow both 3.x and 4.x
versions of XFree86 to co-exist on the same system, it was decided that
XFree86 4.x was to use the configuration file "/etc/X11/XF86Config-4"
if it existed, and only if that file did not exist would the file
"/etc/X11/XF86Config" be used (actually, that is an over-simplification
of the search criteria; please see the XF86Config man page for a complete
description of the search path). Please make sure you know what
configuration file XFree86 is using. If you are in doubt, look for a
line beginning with "(==) Using config file:" in your XFree86 log file
("/var/log/XFree86.0.log"). This README will use "XF86Config" to refer
to your configuration file, whatever it is named.
If you do not have a working XF86Config file, there are several ways
to start: there is a sample config file that comes with XFree86, and
there is a sample config file included with the NVIDIA_GLX package (it
gets installed in /usr/share/doc/NVIDIA_GLX-1.0/). You could also use
a program like 'xf86config'; some distributions provide their own tool
for generating an XF86Config file. For more on XF86Config file syntax,
please refer to the man page.
If you already have an XF86Config file working with a different driver
(such as the 'nv' or 'vesa' driver), then all you need to do is find
the relevant Device section and replace the line:
Driver "nv"
(or Driver "vesa")
with
Driver "nvidia"
In the Module section, make sure you have:
Load "glx"
You should also remove the following lines:
Load "dri"
Load "GLcore"
if they exist. There are also numerous options that can be added to
the XF86Config file to fine-tune the NVIDIA XFree86 driver. Please see
Appendix D for a complete list of these options.
Once you have configured your XF86Config file, you are ready to restart
X and begin using the accelerated OpenGL libraries. After you restart X,
you should be able to run any OpenGL application and it will automatically
use the new NVIDIA libraries. If you encounter any problems, please
see the FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS section below.

while we're on the topic of Linux help, can anyone help me figure out how to get Linux (Mandrake 8.2) to get my modem to work? I continually get the message that my modem is not responding :(
knowing my luck it's something stupid and I should have been able to figure it out, oh well
Make sure its not a Winmodem. They dont work with Linux. At least they used to not work.
You have to excuse me, I work mainly with an AS/400 these days.
And you did edit the XF86CONFIG file?...becuase if you didn't, what you are expiencing is what I'd expect you to experience. Strait install always will crash becuase it doesnt initialize all the modules it needs to.
Thanks everyone for the help!! But I won't move over to Linux yet, because my adsl modem won't work whit Linux so I got to buy a new one for 140€ that suports Linux!
Buy a router and a network card.

What driver pack are you installing from? Did you read the README and INSTALL files? Did you follow the processes to the letter? Why exactly are you updating your driver in the first place? Have you tried using packages?
...what would be a good program to use to run Windows programs on Linux. and while we're on the subject of programs... how in the HELL do you install software on it?? I've searched dozens of documentation pages and have not been able to find one straight answer. HEEEEEEEEEEE~LP!
