PHOTOSHOP: Another "How do I...?"

As some may know, I'm doing a B5 mod for Civ III and I'm working on the interface right now. I want to create a pseudo transparent holograph effect, but I don't know how to get started. (The interface has alpha support as a seperate grayscale image).
Are there any other free tools that can help me? Thanks a bunch

hm... ok.. this is how i'd do it... Though it's probably stupid...
(this is in PSP7, though it shouldn't be too much different in Photoshop)
I'd have the interface graphic probably as a multi-layer image, with different layers for the background, the "Icon" and a "frame"...
I'd give the elements in the layers a different color (like Background - red, Icon - blue and frame - yellow), than I'd flatten it (join the layers). now all i needed to do was giving the different elements (that now are distinguishable very easily because of their color) the right shade of grey, and convert it to a greyscale bmp...

flatten, eh.
Real designers never flatten!

Is there an example of this effect you describe? If I see it, I might be able to explain.

It depends how you define "flatten". The real definition would be using the flatten function, but real designers don't do that. You might, however, flatten it but copying visible layers into another image to use as the final product.

Real designers will flatten when everything is done. They have to sometimes because other software may not be able to handle a layer format such as PSD.

Real designers will always have a PSD/TIFF original to come back to...

There's something other than photoshop?!

This comes as a huge shock to me. For a moment, I thought I was assured compatibility!

Wait, no I wasn't.

Hmm.

But real designers save a copy of the image in an un-compressed format and flatten within that.

Well, the end file format is a 256 color (with a custom pallet of my choice) pcx file, so layers arn't in by default.
I want a ripple effect like that of a Sharlin's holo system as it turns on. Filters are the devil, because I can't work them right ;-)

I'll try, but again, I sure could use examples.

0 is the ammount of web space I have to post pictures. It sure would be nice to attach images like other forums can ;-) I haven't been able to find pics of any interface from B5. I have nothing on tape and season 1 DVD's aren't out yet.
