WEB-General -- Firstones.com Main Page!

Well, with the release of the new page, I now have one less thing to do.

On to the new plan: I wish to make the Firstones.com home page a bit more dynamic.

Goals:
Have a user-selectable interface style. True, it has no "real" purpose, but it does provide a bit of user friendlyness and fun.

Means:
Rather cloudy.
It should revolve around cookies, so that's one step.

For more information (or less), visit http://aardvark.firstones.com .

This will be the new home of all experimental activity on the site.

Even if this does not become the actual home page of firstones.com, it will serve to further educate me.

Babylon6, your site has proven very useful so far

I just was struck by the greatest idea:

Have each dynamic object replaced with a variable.

There woudl be a drop-down box at the top of the page, or somewhere, that would set a cookie to an option (1,2,3,etc.). The browser would read this cookie and apply a filename to each variable.

Example in plain english:
Person sees menu, sets option 3.
Browser reads code.
If option one, then $obj1="topblue.jpg"
If option two, then $obj1="topgreen.jpg"
If option three, then $obj1="topwhite.jpg"
Option three is currently selected.
[ IMG SRC=$obj1 ] becomes

Sounds like a pretty cool idea, but first you could make the layout to work properly in Netscape too.

Does it work yet?
• PJHPJH The Lovely Thing
No. Don't you have Netscape 4.x and 6.x to test it with?

He refuses to download them. He says I have to test it.

Well, I wish not to download two more browsers that take up my prescious space.
I'm spending way too much time properly distributing the 300 mb I have left.
• SanfamSanfam I like clocks.
Idea! I'll install it on here. This is a completely different system with lots of space.

You should really investigate burning all those B5 episodes to CD. And where's my Futurama?

Well, I tested with the following browsers:
Internet Explorer 4
Internet Explorer 5
Internet Explorer 5.5
Internet Explorer 6
Mozilla 0.9.7
Netscape Communicator 4.78
Netscape 6.2
Opera 5

With the exception of NS Communicator 4.78, every browser renders the pages perfectly fine. Communicator 4.78 slaughters the main page. It tears the tables into meaty bits and throws them all over the horizontal.

Every other browser works flawlessly.
Note to those using NSC 4.78: Don't.
Upgrade to 6 or something more recent.
• PJHPJH The Lovely Thing
Damn, that's too bad. Could you please try to make it work with Netscape 4.78 also? Because Netscape 6.x has a few issues which I really don't like and thus I don't want to use it. Opera would be an excellent choice, but you have to pay to use it without ads. Mozilla, well I don't have personal experience, but I've heard some bad things about it and IE I simply will not be using as my primary browser ever, period.

I'll see what can be done. I have a rough idea of where the problem lies.

Edit: Then again, maybe not.

PJH: Mozilla is actually a good browser. It handles everything well. It just crashes a little too often for me.
