    A triple sphere, a rectangular plane, and a ring shaped morph plane model.

    Spheres are used for planet surface mapping, and two levels of atmospheric stuff.

    flat rectangular plane gets the X axis gradients, and the ring morph is used to bend the rectangular plane, and more importantly it's textured gradients, into the planetary rings.

    This is for lightwave of course, other applications may have different paths to the same result.

    I wanted to mention that I used Kerlin Softworks's Gradient Thief to get the rings color bands the way I wanted them.
