Must have missed this thread...

I finally have time to do some modelling again, and to prepare for the construction of my Hoplite Mk II, I've decided to do the Whitestar splines tutorial. So far I have the underside of the nose. It's shiny!
I have to say that I like splines now. They're great for getting nice shapes with good detail easily.

Oh yes, nurbs do rock. I made my entire dragon with them. But splines are really good for non-organic curved surfaces because you can get in the nice details like sharp edges on wings or similar so much more easily.

• RubberEagleRubberEagle What's a rubber eagle used for, anyway?
*hehe* yeah.. did about 75% of my StarFury with Splines , and use them extensively for every other mesh i'm doing (Hell, I've done a low poly Enterprise-A mesh, and about 90% of it were done with splines... just 6 boxes, 4 spheres and one cylinder.. • BigglesBiggles The Man Without a Face
The only problem I have is sometimes getting corrupted (ie crumpled) meshes out of them. I've yet to work out how to fix that. It always happens with three sided ones, which is to be expected, but it also happens with 4 sided ones sometimes.

Big L's:

Are you refering to Non-Planar poly's?

In Modeler 5.x you can select the polygon mode button at the bottom, then type the "w" key to get polygon stats you should be able to select the non-planar poly's by themselves, and just go and triple them.

You like your sub, don't you? Me to.

I'm refering to crumpled meshes. The polygons themselves are planar, but the mesh they form has bad bad bad wrinkles in it, occasionally having some polygons facing in completely the opposite direction.

Hmmmm..... you've probably built your mesh somehow wrong then. It's easy to make mistakes when patching spline cages and those often appear as a kind of "wrinkles" when rendering.

Can you show us an example pic(s) of those meshes? It's much easier to find out what's wrong when seeing the error.

• JackNJackN Lightwave Alien
Heh heh...

I'm just now getting back into using Lightwave. I'm still stuck in the 5.6c version era though...

I'm going to have to get some books on 6.5x and 7 here soon...

Yeah, I need to finish the Shadow B6, and then get my concept of a Drakh B6 done also...

Still on the list...
