The picture in that last link makes it look like all of Manhattan Island was destroyed.

That may be more true than you think. I've been inside those towers....that much concrete falling to the ground is bound to damage smaller buildings in it's shadow.

Each tower contained 110 floors. Estimation is that between 50-60 stories collapsed and/or imploded due to structural failures.

I was able to take videos with m y laptop today. I was horrified beyond belief when I saw the tower go down. Then beyond words with the second. It's so sad. TO consider that I am within driving range of the city is to make it stronger. THis is a huge hit very close to home for me.

I'll probably divX my videos and get them on the server.

I can't handle it anymore. I'm going to try to relax before it hurts me anymore psycologicaly. I can't belive any bastard could kill himself and thousands of innocent people, much less four. All my hopes and prayers are with the people in New York and Washington. I won't check again for at least an hour. I recomend you do the same.

Quite true. Even in a controlled detonation, like during the demolition of a condemed building, it's not uncommon for adjacent buildings to suffer damage such as broken windows and minor cosmetic damage. But here, you've got two insanely tall structures, the collapse of which is anything BUT controlled. Furthermore, each of these towers is filled with objects that wouldn't be present in a condemmed building -- tons and tons of objects like desks, computers, etc....and hundreds of tons of flamable material (carpeting, paper, cardboard) that can rain fire on adjacent structures.

There's bound to be lots of damage in the area.

Having seen the vids of the tower collapses, I have to congratulate the designers; these towers fell down, not over. That alone probably saved hundreds.

Actually, they had just finished a 'redesign' on the tower innards with just this purpose in mind...

it probably saved a lot of people...

Another building gone down. 7 WTC, and some other "nearby buildings are ablaze in the area".
• SanfamSanfam I like clocks.
The designer did well, yes.
I was simply amazed at the fact one of the towers survived the first attack with only a hole, but otherwise little other damage and definate stability. Considering that one of them, cannot remember which, had also survived the 1993 bombing. They were amazing buildings, true marvels of engineering, and symbols of American pride. The world may only hope something as good as, if not better, will replace them in the future. IMHO, that building would not have collapsed, had the one next to it not gone down. It seems the fires were the reason they collapsed, not the impact.

It's the amount of fuel that caused it...

That kind of heat will soften steel, cause cement to explode like hot rocks when cold water is poured over them.

With the structural weakening, and the domino effect of gravity and mass, I'm suprised they lasted as long as they did after the crashes...
• BigglesBiggles The Man Without a Face
The buildings used a shell structure. This basically means that they have very little internal supports, with the walls providing all the strength. As everyone knows, if you crack an egg shell it loses all its structural integrity. They cracked both shells quite effectively. The second one was cracked much better (or worse I guess) than the first. It took out a corner, which is a focal point for forces. It also hit lower down, which means much greater weight leaning on a severely weakened support structure. Then we have the huge quantities of jet fuel burning in both craters, which softens the reinforcing material (steel mainly). The result is that the second tower to be hit can no longer support the weight of the huge chunk of building on weakened supports. This huge chunk falls into the lower part of the building, which fails to withstand the impact and collapses. A little while later, a similar thing happens on the first building to be hit. The top part crashes into the bottom part, causing it to collapse.
Now the question is, if the buildings had been designed using the more conventional "internal pillars everywhere" method, would they still have collapsed? Personally, I think they would have because of the shear force of a fully-fueled jet liner crashing into it would shatter the internal supports just as well as it shattered the shell of the buildings.
