I mean, if I went 'round saying I was an emperor just because some moistened bint had lobbed a scimitar at me, they'd put me away!
[b]The picture in that last link makes it look like all of Manhattan Island was destroyed.

That may be more true than you think. I've been inside those towers....that much concrete falling to the ground is bound to damage smaller buildings in it's shadow.

I'll probably divX my videos and get them on the server.
Quite true. Even in a controlled detonation, like during the demolition of a condemed building, it's not uncommon for adjacent buildings to suffer damage such as broken windows and minor cosmetic damage. But here, you've got two insanely tall structures, the collapse of which is anything BUT controlled. Furthermore, each of these towers is filled with objects that wouldn't be present in a condemmed building -- tons and tons of objects like desks, computers, etc....and hundreds of tons of flamable material (carpeting, paper, cardboard) that can rain fire on adjacent structures.
There's bound to be lots of damage in the area.

I was simply amazed at the fact one of the towers survived the first attack with only a hole, but otherwise little other damage and definate stability. Considering that one of them, cannot remember which, had also survived the 1993 bombing. They were amazing buildings, true marvels of engineering, and symbols of American pride. The world may only hope something as good as, if not better, will replace them in the future. IMHO, that building would not have collapsed, had the one next to it not gone down. It seems the fires were the reason they collapsed, not the impact.
That kind of heat will soften steel, cause cement to explode like hot rocks when cold water is poured over them.
With the structural weakening, and the domino effect of gravity and mass, I'm suprised they lasted as long as they did after the crashes...
Now the question is, if the buildings had been designed using the more conventional "internal pillars everywhere" method, would they still have collapsed? Personally, I think they would have because of the shear force of a fully-fueled jet liner crashing into it would shatter the internal supports just as well as it shattered the shell of the buildings.
