    The guy who's writing this stuff told me that it's from "Robbie Max-thrust." It's a nic from flight school days. Over the years it's been shortened to "Max".

    LOL. Max would agree. Here's the story. Max isn't very tall. During the first year of flight school after everyone had had too many beers at a local pub someone made the mistake of calling McCoy "Little Robbie". Even though that guy never used "Little Robbie" again, "Robbie” stuck, mostly because McCoy’s buddies wouldn’t let it drop – just good-natured ribbing.

    During that first year the flight instructors were constantly giving McCoy a hard time about doing everything at maximum thrust and causing undo wear and tear on the old birds at the flight school. Seems McCoy had a serious need for speed. So Robbie Max-thrust was born one day.

    By the time McCoy was transferred to Mars duty, only "Max" stuck. Now all of his friends call him Max, even though his name is Robert.
