Random Chaos
Actually Carefully-selected Order in disguise
in Zocalo v2.0
For those of you that don't know why we seem to have all these internet problems today, it's due to a virus hitting servers overnight.

"Millions of Internet users in South Korea were stranded when computers at Korea Telecom Freetel and SK Telecom failed. Service was restored but remained slow, officials said. In Japan, NHK television reported heavy data traffic swamped some of the country's Internet connections, and Finnish phone operator TeliaSonera reported some problems."
"At the height of the attack, another company reported that computers were flooded with more than 125 megabytes of data every second."

RadiusCo on the otherhand is who Firstones uses.

This is what Striker/Chase/TV told me:
"TV at Work: Howdy....
We use Linux. We're not affected, but our data center was hit hard. They're trying to get a grip on it as we speak."
*slaps RC back
Get a life and a girl(boy)friend!
I've been troubleshooting this since 11:45 pm CST. I haven't slept since Thursday night.

Apparently at one point 5 of the root DNS servers were down. Currently pretty much all of UUNet is dead in the water.

2 of my DNS servers aren't even responding though - network must be dead where they are...which I can believe since they are on the same network as my website which is also down.
To check them, IF you have Win2k or XP or NT:
Run CMD
NSLOOKUP
NSLookup Commands:
Server {dns-server you want to test}
ip
IP tests that IP
Other commands you probably won't need.

quite seriously...
The root cause of this whole incident is the fact that the worm attacks SQL databases, Micro$oft products, because they are so damned common, a monopoly.
How many viruses have been written for Macs and Linux systems ??
Buy Macs, buy Linux, or watch the intenet go to hell my friends.
run Mac servers..

does MAC servers exist? :P
25% of the internet is MS.
75% of the internet is Unix/Linux.
Nice try...this worm only hit 25% of the internet, and only the unpatched ones. The other 75% couldn't be infected.
And Mac doesn't even rate in terms of a percentage of servers...

Where did you hear that? I was reading posts from network engineers who were claiming just the opposite - that none of the root DNS servers were down. However, some were suggesting the 'net was hit pretty heavily by what may be a worm exploiting a vulnerability in Microsoft SQL to conduct DDOS attacks.
How many viruses have been written for Macs and Linux systems ??
Due to the fact that there are comparatively few Macs out there, I'd say a few but not many. UNIX, however...plenty.
The other 75% couldn't be infected.
...but can be hammered by the end-result of other systems being affected. A server doesn't have to run Windows to be the target of a Windows-originated DDOS attack. SYN floods, etc.

I read that it was 5 of the main routers were down, not DNS servers.

Not true. No "viruses" have been written for Linux - they don't work. However, plenty of Worms and Trojans have been written for Linux.
Remember the difference between Virus, Worm, and Trojan. They do different things.

The point was to prove to our resident Mac provider that the majority of the systems already weren't Windows and that he was just blowing his mouth for no reason
And I didn't say there were lots of Mac servers out there, there aren't. Chiefly because they are expensive. And again as always, they are known to be as stable as ****... just like regular Macs... and if I'm not mistaken one usually aims to have extremely long uptime Vs downtime when one considers servers...
things may have changed somewhat since the last Macserver I knew much about was pre Jaguar so I cant really comment now... but knowing Macs they will be much the same as they were.. bullet proof, perhaps still on par with Unix servers.
anyways, my comments still stand M$ft sucks, and it will continue to suck.
besides... while there are merits in all being able to talk to each other out here in the cyberverse, we face great peril if we have one single OS/basic system, without diversity all it takes is one mean mother ****er virus/trojan/nefarious little piece of code and we are all screwed.
the exact same principile applies in nature... without genetic diversity were stuffed... if for instance a virus invaded only two of our current rice varieties... kiss about 1/3 of the worlds population goodbye...
so...
I dont so much hate M$ft passe... I hate the threat it represents to our way of life
in that tone... Macs current catch phrase.. "think different" has a really imperative ring to it doesnt it boys and girls...
edit : added some profanity

It was on Slashdot. I just read it again, and it doesn't actually say "down", it says "effectively disabled".

Well... You're nitpickng a little...
There are two major security holes that have since been addressed since RH version 7.2 . Mandrake 8.2 had the fixes already.
Bottom line is, that the Linux (and Unix OS for that matter) are much tighter security wise, and have less issues. Benefit of OpenSource, everybody is quick to fix each others mistakes, and no ONE person can manipulate the design for their own agenda.
Yes, I like Linux (Unix also! ), just need to get more time under the hood with it. I use MS stuff as little as possible now days.
