Southeast Asia's got spiders like that, too.
My dad was with an Army construction battalion that was helping to build the main highway from Bangkok to the Thai-Cambodian border when he first saw one. He was walking back to camp one day when he heard an awful screeching sound off to one side. A monkey had become trapped in a large web that had been spun between two trees, and a large spider (my dad said it was 8"-12" across) was heading for the monkey. Needless to say, this really freaked out my dad. He had some pretty vivid nightmares for about a week after that.

I think you got told a Snipe story squiddy, no spider builds webs that could trap a monkey, well maybe if they used duct tape

Actually, the Department of Defense is or was recently putting research into a particular spider's webbing (can't recall which) that, if rolled into a strand about as thick as a pencil, has the right tensile strength and elasticity to serve as the wire for arrested ladings on aircraft carriers.

No offence but I think you'd better check that one out for signs of a "when I was your age etc..." tale. Larger spiders generaly don't bother with flycatcher-type webs, but again that's as far as I know.

Yeah, large spiders are hunting types, not trappers usualy, and secondly YES spider silk is emensly strong, but does anybody know how many strands of spider silk it would take to make something the thickness of a pencile? its ALOT and nextly the force it could susitain is a theoretical value, in reality the spider silk experiments havent been anywhere near that succesfull (and they have been researching spider silk for two decades now for a variety of military applications)

Spider silk is very strong...for its size. There is no way it could hold a large an animal as a monkey. MAYBE a small bird (ala hummingbird), but nothing that large. My friend, your dad was yanking your chain. • Sorry guys, your wrong. the story is quite possible.

I've spoken with some missionarys that were over in (Can't remember exact location, I want to say Papua New Guini) where there were spiders 12-18 inches in size, they were not poisonous, but they DID have webs. And it was STRONG. the missionaries kids would take one of those spoders, smack its bottom onto the side of a building (Or hut I guess) and run it around the village. It was strong enough to trip an unwary villager (Or in some cases, their other siblings... )

so the story is possible. Myself, I don't think I'd want to pick up a 12 inch spider...

Yeah, and my dog used to prepare our evening meal for us. After that he used to perform the piano exit to Layla upside down while smoking a hand(paw) rolled cigar..... while balancing a plate on his tail.

folks.... dont force me to go looking for proof.... but.... there are spiders as big as dinner plates... in Queensland Australia and in the tropics of the Pacific region as well as South America....

some jungle indians fashion little harnesses and keep them as pets to control vermin like rats mice and birds.

they are genuinely humungus... 12-18 inches is correct

there common name is "Bird Eating Spider" for very good reason. I'm not sure about the silk thing, but yes any spider silk is humungusly strong, just how much and what sort the Bird Eating Spider produces I dont know...

anyways.... big spiders exist and yes a particularly large one could eat a small monkey.
