My mom is thinking about buying a DVD player. I want to ask people I trust (you guys and/or girls) what kind to get. She would prefer a DVD/VCR combo but let me know what you think. Price is a factor. Let me know what brands you like or models. Thanks in advance.

I've got a Daewoo set-top player sitting next to me and I love it to death. For $85, its worth every penny. (had it since X-mas of last year) Even plays mp3s.

The Sharp is just as easy.
Coupling them both to my TV was very simple.

buy a PS2, it carries Sony's second to top DVD player, it does all the neat stuff and comes with a decent warranty. When all is said and done its the best way to go.
A cheap DVD player becomes a very expensive one if you have to fix/replace it more than once...
you get what you pay for
as far as VCR's go, unless you have your own extensive collection at home, I wouldnt bother, they are a dying technology, give it five years and most things with be DVD rental wise.
We have a Mustek DVD player (I think it's the model 520). Very reasonably priced, good standard features, well built, and all region free.

I would avoid the game system to play DVD's too. The controls are a pain, the fan has been mentioned, and getting to extra features is a real chore. (The game console solution is good for starving students who don't have the money for both.)
I'd go for a sony or one of the panasonic DVD-RV31 family machines. I've had good luck with them.

And what happens if they do have a good TV? Or get a good TV later on?

They don't play Video CD's for a start, they are noisy (compared to a decent DVD player) and the quality isnt as good when I've used one plugged into my TV.
Panasonic is good! I have one with a 5-cd changer upstairs that I got on the cheap and its excellent.
