DVD Players

RhettRhett (Not even a monkey)
My mom is thinking about buying a DVD player. I want to ask people I trust (you guys and/or girls) what kind to get. She would prefer a DVD/VCR combo but let me know what you think. Price is a factor. Let me know what brands you like or models. Thanks in advance.

Avoid the DVD\VCR players at all costs. They are utter garbage. Same goes for any Philips DVD products. If one side dies, you're SOL. My parents own a Philips DVD/VCR combo...and it utterly blows chunks. We can only watch one movie at a time in it because the damn thing gets so hot. That, and the VCR portion of it died a few months ago so they had to buy a separate VCR player to watch the older movies. (warranty for the Philips POS is 1year, and they've had it for over 2)

I've got a Daewoo set-top player sitting next to me and I love it to death. For $85, its worth every penny. (had it since X-mas of last year) Even plays mp3s.

I have an RCA DVD player and a Sharp VHS and they work fine. The RCA is easy to use, load and plays great.

The Sharp is just as easy.

Coupling them both to my TV was very simple.

though you may have trouble convincing Mah and Pah about the benefits of it seeing it plays 'time wasting/brain rotting' games...

buy a PS2, it carries Sony's second to top DVD player, it does all the neat stuff and comes with a decent warranty. When all is said and done its the best way to go.

A cheap DVD player becomes a very expensive one if you have to fix/replace it more than once...

you get what you pay for

as far as VCR's go, unless you have your own extensive collection at home, I wouldnt bother, they are a dying technology, give it five years and most things with be DVD rental wise.

Unfortunately, the PS2 DVD playing isn't all it's cracked up to be. For starters, you have the noise of a cooling fan while watching your movie. The quality isn't as good either.

We have a Mustek DVD player (I think it's the model 520). Very reasonably priced, good standard features, well built, and all region free.

youre assuming that A) the TV its going to connect to is a good enough for you to be able to discern the difference, B) that the PS2 is going to be open on top of the TV or something in a house as quiet as a crypt and they'll play nothing but tense quiet thrillers on the player...C) where did you get the impression a Ps2 was noisy ? I've not heard one loud enough to even warrant mentioning it
  • I would not do the combo machine. Stand alone vcr's are dirt cheap now. Having combo machines only mean one part will die and you'll feel stupid in a few years having half a working machine.

I would avoid the game system to play DVD's too. The controls are a pain, the fan has been mentioned, and getting to extra features is a real chore. (The game console solution is good for starving students who don't have the money for both.)

I'd go for a sony or one of the panasonic DVD-RV31 family machines. I've had good luck with them.

To be honest, I'm not all that impressed with RCA products either. My 25" TV is starting to bite the dust after a little over a year of use. Rather pathetic if you ask me. (Picture dies intermitently. Cables are fine. Does it no matter which input I use.) Model# F25424

Is it a low-end, or high-end unit? Price ranges can work miracles on product quality, with the exception of the Sharper Image. :P

PS2's are not as quite as a pure player. They may not play quiet tense thrillers all the time, but if they play one occasionally...
And what happens if they do have a good TV? Or get a good TV later on?

Dont get a Playstaion 2 as a DVD player, its a bad idea.

They don't play Video CD's for a start, they are noisy (compared to a decent DVD player) and the quality isnt as good when I've used one plugged into my TV.

Panasonic is good! I have one with a 5-cd changer upstairs that I got on the cheap and its excellent.

Playstation2 has a decent image quality if you use euroscart cables.
