That's HUGE, and it happened so long ago.
It's nice, but I hope it doesn't happen too close to us next time. So what was it then, was it a star or something larger?

That's nothing. I have a video of a supernova. It looks really ****ing cool, you can see the shockwaves spreading out from the source and heating the material they pass through.

Ok... What's wrong with this picture?

Sorry... Not the picture, but the comment below it...?

Answer: If the event happened 800 years prior to us viewing it, and the light takes 5 thousand years to travel to us, then the event happened 5800 years ago...

Nnnnnoo. Not exactly. If we just watched the event, and the light travelled 5,000 years until it reached us, then the event took place... 5,000 years ago. (Unless the light took a really long break.)

What you had in mind was an ancient artifact called "The Historical Hubble Telescope" which is 800 years old .

If you read the caption again, it does mention that it actually happened 5800 years ago (absolute time). The image that you're seeing was at a point 800 years after the star went nova.

The Star went nova 5800 years ago. The Star is/was 5000 LY away from us. But the light that created that image left the star 800 years after it actually went nova.

You know...

Getting back to the real reasons for this thread... (Beauty of the Universe)

I felt that way about the Eagle nebula (Hubble M16 picture of the Star Pillars) when I first saw them.

For the first time in REAL life, the Universe was presented in vibrant color, instead of the stale black and periodic hint of star colors.

• BigglesBiggles The Man Without a Face
Yeah. In fact, that's another good thing about B5. They had nebulas and stuff like that in the background of space shots. You look at Star Trek and its clones, most of them have plain starfields.
It's so nice to see the beauty of the universe once in a while. I suggest you all do what I do and check this link once a day, every day. I have got some incredible wallpapers out of that thing.

Well, it was more difficult, then, but they have started to get better. I think there was a faint blue-gray nebula around DS9, and Voyager started to have a nebula every other month.
• did you remember the animation at the end of freespace2?

when the enemy blows the capella system?

good weapons no?

(freespace3 won´t be released )
• BigglesBiggles The Man Without a Face
Yes, but the thing with Voyager is that they arn't just nebulas in the background, they only have them when they have to fly through Yet Another Dangerous Nebula. And I don't remember any nebula around DS9.

Well, it's either poor TV reception, or a very faint, spotty gray nebula in the opening credits.

Come to think about it, there was a comet in the TNG theme....and they look pretty similar. Cooincidence?

Nah. TNG had one in the episode "Masks". It was perfectly spherical, and melted away from a phaser being fired at once spot. DS9's was far superior. It was more realistic, and did not house a gigantic alien archive. Nor did it take over the defiant. TNG also produces a stereotype that all perfectly spherical comets have an alien archive at their center. That is simply wrong.

Come to think about it, you do see one comet in DS9. It was the ep with the three cardassian scientists and Kira going nuts over some stupid predition about the destruction of the wormhole.
