Browser Questions

RhettRhett (Not even a monkey)
First question: How do you change the default browser size when you shift-click (to open in a new window) in I.E.?
Second: Do you guys/gals use Mozilla? Is it worth it? How much different is it from I.E. (I would like to move away from MS crap).

Thanks it for now. Thanks.

P.S. I keep getting during games (Stronghold comes to mind) an odd flickering, like the desktop coming to the screen and then quickly going back to the game. This is only on the bottom third of the screen. Any ideas?

Mozilla is a very good browser. It handles all webpages that are programmed to HTML spec (IE adds stuff to this spec which aren't officially recognized by any browsers other then IE). Mozilla has a anti-popup feature built into it to kill popups.

Get Mozilla V1.2. 1.0 is buggy, but ok. 1.1 is utterly screwy in how it works. I've been using 1.2 (alpha, beta, and final versions) for a while. The biggest problem with Mozilla is the lack of plugins that actually operate inside the browser. Acrobat spawns an external Acrobat window instead of being integrated. WinAmp opens instead of sound being integrated. Etc. But actually, in a lot of ways this is good. It prevents people from incorperating viruses into e-mails having them effect your system becuase the file formats prompt you as to what you wish to do with them .

    I hate IE personally...

Well, I am giving it a shot right now.

I use the latest mozilla (1.2.1). I find it to be a very nice browser. It supports all the specs properly (even IE doesn't do that). The popup blocking is great. I highly recommend it.
If you find that mozilla is a bit too slow for you (the layout engine is fast, but the application itself is a little on the slow side), then try Phoenix. It uses the same layout engine, but it's just a browser, nothing more. Thus it's not bloated.

Plus, the entire interface is skinnable. This is not possible with IE. I'm using the Skypilot theme right now and it freakin' RULES!

That being said, the interface itself is quite similar to that of Netscape. Layout is pretty much the same, but there are a few differences here and there. Its well worth the download.

One thing I don't link about mozilla is the rigidness of the toolbars. They must be shown in a particular place on screen. You can't have two of them in the same row, like in IE.

Not many people use more than one toolbar in the same row, so the developers took this into account. Plus, its a pain in the ass to have to click a button just to see the rest of the toolbar.

Well, I like it. Pretty nice, like the ability to use themes. Using either skypilot or orbit 3 most of the time. It is going to take some time to get used to, however. Plus my bookmarks didn't import from IE. Now I am going to have to hand enter them (I can't seem to find a place to put them in without doing it by hand). Well, here's to not using micro$oft.

    Some problems:
    1) Some problems with certain images.
    2) Certain things won't happen because of the popup blocker (such as sams scrolling title).
    3) Other small bugs. Still, better than working with MS.

EDIT: One last thing. I get that CTRL Click is to open a new browser window, but what is the shortcut for the cool tabbed view? The one where everything is in the same browser. This would be encredibly usefull for when I browse forums. Damn cool feature, I just hope there is a shortcut key for it (rather than RC, open in new tab). Thanks in advance.

No, Sam's title is because the script isn't valid HTML. :-)

Learn to look in the preferences. Then you will find that you can set the shortcut yourself.

But then when you press CTRL Click everythin opens in a tab. I want to be able to open some in new windows and some in a new tab. Is this possible?

Stupid me, I forgot to export the bookmarks from IE first...

    Well...

You can always right-click: Open in new window/tab to get arround that.

I personally open 2 Mozilla windows when Mozilla starts:
Window 1 - News, weather, TV schedule, school, anything non-fun related
Window 2 - Forums - every one of them

Remember: Ctrl-N opens a new window, Ctrl-T opens a new tab. That doesn't open a link there, but you can then open bookmarks there.

    -----------

    Tips:
Set and use the Personal Toolbar system. Don't put links onto it, but instead put directories into it. I actually have my entire bookmarks dir INSIDE of the Personal Toolbar folder (In the past you couldn't set your home bookmark DIR to the toolbar folder, so I have it set up to use a 1 dir within that folder).

Here is what it looks like: http://treadmarks.elitehunters.com/temp/mozilla.jpg

(remember you can put dirs within those dropdowns also - makes it real easy to get at the main bookmarks, but not much harder to hit the less used ones)

I see what you mean. That is very useful! Thanks for the tip.

Thats one of the reason I will never be able to use IE - it doesn't have a feature like that. I've been doing that with my bookmarks for about 4-5 years now.

Try installing the mouse gestures package from mozdev. It provides some very nice little shortcuts.

As you damn well should be.

Anyways, Mouse gestures are very cool. The only problem is that the one to open a link in a new window does not work. It opens a new window but nothing comes up, just a blank white page. Even when I hit reload, nothing.

Then I suggest you fire off an e-mail to the developer so they can code up a fix for that bug.

Don't you just love open-source software?

Hell, if you're a programmer you can fix it yourself.

I am pretty sure it is a known bug. But, I think there is a new alpha build. I'll go see if that fixes it. I love open source...
