Just come back from seeing it, and wow. Well worth the wait.

I was a bit worried on how Gollum would come across, but I needn't have. Gollum's fantastic as is the rest of the film.

I dont understand why people bother going to early screenings, I'd rather be in bed or be doing other things with another person in bed if you get me :|

Seriously, its not going to be better because you saw it earlier! I mean its not like they (censored for spoilers)

Ok, that film TOTALLY rocked!
• SanfamSanfam I like clocks.
It sure can be!

Example: Star Wars: Episode 2

I went to the premier and got to see an amazing, almost dust and scratch free print.

Two days later, I went back. The film had been damaged in handling between the showings, and was *terribly* scratched on one part, and distorted on another. I know it's extreme, but it happened to me!

Also, some bad quality prints will lose a bit of color. Also, some theaters have older projectors, which seem to have a habit of damaging the film somewhat easily.

And then there's the fact that you can see it before everyone else, and brag about it.

Possible really minor Spoilers for those who havent seen the movie/read the book.

Well, I am going to post this before I read the thread. (unbiased, unfiltered opinions). Overall, I really enjoyed the movie. I will have to see the movie a few more times to absorb everything. However, here are some of my gripes, likes, and other info.

1) I would have liked a strait adaptation of Tolkien. The additions/changes were ok (I liked the warg attack up to someones falling). I can see why things were changed, but for a hard-core Tolkien reader it was pretty major changes (elves showing up a certain spots )
2) Gollom was not dark enough. I always invisioned him as a blackish creature, so that is the way it should have been, damnit.
3) The ents were cool. I liked the way they were done and how they were quite different from each other (as the book points out). I was afraid the ents would end up looking stupid, but my fear was unrealized (thank goodness).
4) Helms Deep was damn cool. However, I was to suprised by the changes made to the story to get the full impact (perhaps not having read the book would have been a benifit in this respect).
5) I hated the change in Faramir's character extreamly. It really sucked, IMHO.
6) Overall, a very worthy sequel to the excellent Fellowship. Despite the fact I mostly complained in this thread, I really liked it. Very solid movie. After a few more times watching it I think I will grow to like it more and more. Great job, Peter Jackson and actors.
My next post will respond to others thoughts.

Ok, here's my spoiler-free review of the film:

Wow.

The end.

Ok, really, this film tops the first one. And the star of this one is Gollum, hands down.

I have never seen CGI look like this before. Gollum is without a doubt the most realistic CGI creature that has ever been seen on film. His face alone is so incredibly well animated, you'll find yourself ignoring that he's a CGI character. Gollum is a living, breathing...er, Hobbit-like thing. Many of the scenes with Gollum are so profound, they tug at you emotionally. Every frame of Gollum's animation conveyed his sadness, his longing for the ring, and his internal struggle. And his "acting" is so complex, you'll find yourself wanting to laugh at him and have pity on him at the same time. He's that good.

I had avoided seeing pictures of the Ents (living trees) for a long time. I was afraid that when I saw them, my first thought would be, "Hey, how would you like it if someone picked apples off of you?"....fortunately, the Ents are breathtaking.

And then there's the Battle of Helm's Deep.... simply amazing.

To say any more would spoil the film. But there are some surprises, and a fair amount of humor.

I particularly like this comment in a review of it:

" But so much of The Two Towers is about action. Great battles between roaring Uruk-Hai and valiant Rohan or Gondorians or Ents, depending on which part of the last half hour is under discussion.

That's something to see. Much of it makes Braveheart look like a Glasgow pub brawl."

Speaking of reviews, 105 fresh and 2 rotten at rotten tomatoes so far. Not bad.

I totally agree with what rhett wrote...
though he forgot to mention, that they did push the last part of the book to the third movie...
in the case of this movie, i really think it would have been better to not have read the book.. too much changes (I really HATE what they've done with Faramir.. they've changed his character nearly 180 degrees, and i also hate arwen, but there's no point whining about that now...)

Helms deep was cool though..

(btw.. after reading rhett's post more thoroughly, i can say i 100% agree with what he said, in every aspect)

I too was dissapointed with the Change to Faramir's character, i guess they were trying to show that he was more like Boromir,

But that was my only real complaint, I mean Merry and Pippin's storyline was kinda weaak, i mean all they did was ride around in treebeard the whole movie, And i think they used too much comic relief with Gimli. even tho it was funny as hell.

I was very very very dissapointed when i first heard 2 years ago that Sheelob would not be in the movie, But from what happens at the end of the film, i guess she'll be in the beginning of the 3rd movie, so they just shifted her a bit from the 2nd to the 3rd, Which is fine with me as long as we get to see her!!!

Also, it seemed to invoke humor in the wrong spot in a few places, especially when gollum is having his internal struggle between Smegol and Gollum, The whole audience was laughing, but that is supposed to be a very serious scene, with the two sides of his personality struggling for control.

The CG work was farkin amazing, Gollum was great, They had him pretty close to what i had always imagined him looking like, There was ONE glitch in the CG that i noticed. and i wonder if anyone else did,

When the wargs attack there is one scene where a warg leaps and knocks over a horsed rider, when they hit the ground, the horse doesen't seem to fit in with the CG warg and the Ground, its hard to describe, but it just looked like the horse didn't belong in the shot and was added later.

All in all, i loved it, and might sneak out and see it again tomorow when the wife is at work and the kids are at school.

OK, I do agree about Faramir's character change, I didn't really like that. But I'm perfectly happy with everything else. More than happy!
The film rocked!

Why would Gollum be dark? He's lived in a cave for decades, hasn't he? Being based on Hobbit stock, we can assume he'd tan the way humans do, so he'd be very pale after having lived without sunlight for so long.

He looks to me a lot more like the image in the book than the old cartoons portrayed.

I always imagined him as dark because he needed to blend in with his surroundings (he didn't use the ring all the time, you know... ) Gollums multiple personalities were really quite amazing. It was almost like there were two of them. I do agree with there decision to push off the last bit of the book. I think the audience who hasn't read the book (all three of them) would have been pissed because of the utter lack of any closure). The love story crap is bull. Thanks for the agreement, RubberEagle. Damn them for changing Faramir... Doesn't he come back in the end of the Return of the King?

Estimated gross for the opening day from boxofficemojo.com was 26 million. Not bad for a midweek opening in December... Beats the first one by 8 to 10 million, I think. Cool.
