Apple DID NOT INVENT THE MOUSE!! IT WAS INVENTED IN 1964 BY DOUGLAS ENGELBART AND HE HOLDS THE IP!!

Anyways Jeeze, for Apple does have some problems with implmentation, but their processor actualy is a fairly decent processor, since its a large part IBM's technology! ha ha! Apple processors are designed by IBM! ah hell the worlds crazy. Anyways IBM's RISC chips work wonderfully in the RS/6000 and AS/400.. and those both run AIX which is IBMs own flavor of UNIX
Apple hasnt made any major contributions to computer IP, neither has Microsoft.. intel has, but still they kinda suck on implimentation.. and lastly alot of apple hardware is now designed by somebody else (TM)
And frankly other then the CPU'S alot of the stuff we do with intel is also now designed by somebody else (TM)
Apples do have their place, just none of those cheesy Imacs, those things suck.. but I cut the G3's and G4's slack, they keep my friend busy playing the Sims, and If she's at home playing the Sims she's not getting into any trouble.
Sides they work great for the artsy folk and do the crap the artsy folk want to do real well.
For those of us trying to do, well running SETI@home at crack speeds on a quad processor box (which Im sure somebody around here is doing), design nuclear weapons, or tr any other of a number of strange things we get up to, we have our PC's for that..

Folks, let's put this up to a vote: Should I tell him I have four buttons on my trackball, and if I wanted a damned scroll wheel (can't stand the things, myself), I could?
Slade for a Sys Admin, Im kinda suprised by your virulent anti UNIX/LINUX mentality.
Yes, Windows is more tolerant of various hardware configs and widely supported for home users.. thats its job.
The various flavors of Unix and their derivities are ment for heavy work.
I know a particular RS/6000 server that has been completely shut down and rebooted ONCE SINCE 1998!! and that was because last year one of the processors failed and they shut it down so IBM could replace it.. And its running an earlier version of AIX (which is a UNIX derivitive)
You HAVE to run UNIX or LINUX when your doing heavy computing, the windows OS's CANT handel databases with 70 million records, and have those records then dumped over to computer controlled machining equipment.. come on people.
the link you put up was a bit specious, because it threw ALL the distro's of linux into one big pile, each Distro is going to have its own problems and profesionals know that, and fix the version they have. Go to Cert.org, check out the advisories, see all the different groups which have security advisories, and realize its about 10 different companies, that made those 16, where as microsoft has 6 by itself.
Lasty and most telling, how come windows is NOT certified for running on critical pieces of hardware, such as nuclear reactors and other things where failure means life and death, where as things like SuSe linux are?
Im sorry, I know people who are sysadmins at sites where they do things that they can NOT run windowsNT/2000 to do the same function, because it isnt capable of handiling it.

Actualy Kingston and Microsoft both have mice that work on Macs with dual buttons and scroll wheels, I guess what I ment to say was as the default mouse option, the one button mice that they ship with normally is a damn dinosaur, looks cool though.

I'm not anti-Unix or anti-Linux, but I don't buy the notion that they're suitable for desktop use by the masses. Obviously they are far superior to Windows when it comes to heavy duty computing and server tasks, since that's what they were meant to do. I have used both Unix and Linux in a desktop environment and found them to be cumbersome and in the case of Linux, unstable (but as I said, I didn't setup the box and I'm sure it wasn't done properly).
Putting Linux or Unix into a consumer environment like that of Windows is no differnt from putting Windows into a role of running a massive server/database system. They aren't designed for it, so don't try and tell people that Linux is better for their home machines. It might be more stable, but it's much harder to setup and maintain, plus it doesn't have the hardware and software options that *most* people require.

Yeah its a pain in the ass to set up, and on its own in normal behavior not that hard to maintain, till somebody goes in and screws it up.. but your right, it is DEFINATLY not for the uneducated.

What software is it that you think is available for PC's and Mac's that is not available for linux. besides OS dependant specific programs. (like Microsoft Office)
Not really Darwin award quality Vertigo1. Now, if he had been holding a pro-Windows rally, making a speach on a podium, then fell off and impaled himself on a display sculpture of the Windows logo....Oh man, that would be funny.
Aside from games and Office (which I use quite a bit), there are a couple of instant messager programs. Software for my iPod. Software for my flight stick. Mp3 rippers (finally found one I like). I don't think you can get Dreamweaver or Photoshop for Linux, or After Effects, Flash, Premiere. You can get Maya, so that's ok.
The other issue against Linux in the consumer market is that although Linux may have movie players, mp3 players, CD burning programs, IM programs, etc. they are harder to find. Go to Apple's quicktime page to look at a trailer, and you'll see a "download quicktime" option for Macs and Windows, but no Linux. Things like this baffle computer rookies. The support for Linux just isn't there outside the Linux community.

Ok, lets just forget hardware, Going with just software, Every bit of software you just mentioned, is available for linux, Not necccarily the brand names you mentioned. but you can get IM clients, Web Editors, Photo Editors, mp3 rippers, cd burning software, dvd software. in short, anything you can do on a windows machine, you can do on a linux machine except play some games.
As for finding them?, they can go to download.com and download programs the same way that people with a PC can.
Oh, and by the way, http://www.ipodlounge.com/downloads_osx_01.asp
They've got plenty of software there for your IPOD on linux.
Im still waiting for my king geek reward for finding the patent on the mouse and stuff on the GUI damnit
I know you can get those types of programs, but you can't get the programs themselves. Photoshop is an industry standard, and I'm sorry, but having to use Gimp would be like going back to Photoshop 3.0. No thanks.
You can get IM clients, web editors, burning software, and photo editors for Windows 3.11 as well, but none of them will be as good as their WinXP/Mac counterparts.
You can find web editors and such, but in my experience the Linux versions of these programs are never as good as their PC/Mac counterparts. I've never come across a web editor that's better than Dreamweaver/Flash, even on the PC.
There are certainly places you can get Linux software, but it's not as accessible as Windows' stuff, which was my point regarding Quicktime. Almost every website for various downloadable application makes you choose either Win9X, WinNT, WinXP or MacOS. You'll rarely see an option for Linux, which would make the setup and maintenance of the machine much more difficult for the uneducated.
People like us are not the standard for computer users, evidenced by the other thread going on right now "How to reformat a PC". Most people just don't have a clue, and using Linux would make it even worse for them, which is why I don't think it's good enough desktop use by the masses.

I completely disagree with your statement about the IM clients on windows being better than those for linux. The only one that is better is Trillian, and that is better than anything else out there no matter what the platform. The linux ones are better than ICQ by a long way because they arn't so damn bloated.

What are you using for icq on Linux? i was useing gIcq for a while, works very well, i use gaim for when i need an AIM client.
People don't seem to understand that there isn't just one program if you go unix, there are almost as many different programs available for *nix as there are for Windows.
Sure you may not be able to get Photoshop, or Dreamweaver, but you can get image manipulation, and there are plenty of web editors for unix.

As a 3D artist I would never give up Photoshop for something like Gimp, and as I've said I've found Dreamweaver to be the best website edting/management program I've personally used.
There are other issues with Linux as well. The error messages are cryptic. Many things still have to be done through command line. There are many programs that, after download, need to be compiled before they can be used.
Linux HAS come a long way, but it's not there yet.

I personaly think for heavy computing its excellent and much more effecient then windows.
Sorry, The command line is excellent for administration processes because you do not need a command line, hell that additional GUI session takes up resources which could be doing something else
And in NT/2000 and XP you often have to reboot after installing and configuring software.. so its a wash, and most times for even some complicated apps you dont have to reboot the Linux machine.
For heavy buisness and Commerical use a Linux/Unix box is perfect.
Homeusers/average Joe should get something that does something similar to windows CE.. the OS is hard burned onto a chip somewhere so they cant blow it up
I guess it comes down to where do you get your background, from, if you worked your way up from windows boxes you wont get it (then again your not a real geek either )
Im in the anti windows camp for alot of reasons.. Then again, I dont believe everything should be made pretty, flashy or seemingly easy. I just want the damn stuff to work, work right, and work robustly under torture.. which is what Unix and its decendents have a history of doing.
I like seedless grapes unless I have a straw to shoot the seeds at people.

[b]I completely disagree with your statement about the IM clients on windows being better than those for linux.
