Problems with recording in Windows ME
WORF

in Zocalo v2.0
I am trying to help a friend. She is running Windows ME and her microphone stopped working. She has tried changing mics, changing the settings in the volume control panel and such but still cant record anything.
This may or may not be related but while attempted to access the volume control panel she did recieve an error message that said: "There is a problem with your sound hardware. You may install or activate mixer devices from the Control Panel."
We have looked for various sites to help but havn't had any luck so I am posting here to see if anyone has some ideas.

2: Try reinstalling the Soundcard driver (you may have to physically remove your soundcard from it's slot, turn system on, let boot, then turn off, then reinsert it).
[b]1: Try installing a operating system that works.

Lol at #1... Then she would have to dump MS all together...
I would reinstall drivers (as you have all said) and possibly the software that came with the Sound card (if any).
If she's not willing to get a better OS, then tell her to uninstall the software for the sound card, then the reference to it in Device Manager. Then tell her to reboot and re-install the card and software and try again.

buy a Mac..
[b]Does she have a CD recorder? If the sound card drivers only allow one recording device at a time, it may be set to the CD writer, in which case the Mic will not work.
Check that.

For future reference: CD Recorder != audio recording device (not referring to an audio CD here). Anything involving audio recording would be listed in Volume Control or under Multimedia under the Control Panel.
