Tech Time V: Windows strikes back

croxiscroxis I am the walrus
I am going to upgrade windows (finaly! I bought a copy of Win XP Pro!), but I want to back my MBR is case the upgrade erases lilo (a boot loader). How do I do this?

Here is how to fix that:

    Write a Linux boot disk.

    ------

Then you can boot from that disk and rewrite Lilo from Linux if it does erase it.

I don't know about how to rewrite it in Lilo, but I know you can do it. I have had to do that for Grub before. Just make sure you do it with the MBR and not the first booting HD when you restore it - otherwise you will have a TON of problems!

Thats what it is called! Yes, I have grub. How do I go about making a boot disk in linux?

Windows hasn't erased the MBR since the 9x days. However, if you're THAT paranoid then make an entry in the boot.ini for Linux. (run a search on google)

True...but you can still do it manually. And occasionally you have to. So having a Linux boot disk is never a bad idea.

    -------

BTW - with the RedHat CD, you can always boot and enter recovery mode - which allows you access to most linux commands...including the ability to write the MBR again.

Actually, having a linux boot disk is required to be able to do what I mentioned above. (to set it up that is)
