"Something is only impossible until it's not."
Caompared to the original cut, only a few scenes actually expanded the story. The rest were mainly 'fluff'. It is of course very much worth having, but I dont know if Id consider it superior to the original (the original being minimalistically perfect )
the extra stuff (2 DVDs) are truly great! Buy it!

3 DVD's if you buy the gift set, there's also a 134 minute National Geographic "Making Of" Video, I haven't watched it yet, i'm going to try and fit it in today, but i'm also on Disc 4 of the B5 set. There are not enough hours in the day sometimes!

Ya, let me know about the making of vidio. I have to decide to get the cheaper special edition or the expensive boxed set... IS the boxed set worth it? Then I have to find the $$

However, if you buy the collector's gifts set, you get another DVD - a National Geographic documentary DVD.
[b]Just to clear things up, there are 2 DVDs filled with extra material in the regular extended edition DVDs.

The whole embargo seems to be hand-packed, because there were some fingerprints and scratches on the discs. Especially the second disc of the movie itself. Minor surface defects without any real consequence but still a tad disappointing. And no, I don't think anyone meddled with the pack before I bought it because it had a normal foiling wrapped around it... Nah, what the hell, the movie plays like a charm so there's no harm done.
Wathced the flick today, and I have to say it kicks ass! Much better than the original, IMHO. Much closer adaptation to the book than the original, thanks to the shots that were originally edited out. The only thing that left me wondering was that I was under the impression that some of the more bloody battle scenes were left out of the original to lower the P-rating of the movie. Still I didn't see any difference wíth the swordplay scenes in the DVD and the original. I thought there was one more decapitation but... that's it? Odd.
Nevertheless a worthy buy. I'm 55e's poorer but still a happy man.

"It does not require an artist to wield the blade that finds itself struck through the heart of an opponent. It takes a true artist to present the sword and allow the man to strike himself against it."
[b]I got mine yesterday, Collector's Edition, 4 discs in total. I got the booksupports which are pretty darn nifty but no NG Disc? Probably some Region one added bonus or something...

I definately liked the overall feel of the Special Edition, i liked the extended scenes and all, Definately a closer adaptation. especially because they fixed some of my main complaints to the movie when it came out,
I was a little miffed when it first came out, and in one scene, Anduril is in pieces, and then all of a sudden Aragorn is weilding it, with no mention of the re-forging, or how they didn't make a big deal in the original cut of Galadriel giving the fellowshio their cloaks and gifts. The gifts are important because it adds more to the relationship between Gimli and Legolas, it shows how gimli is warming to the Dwarfs, which helps in sealing the rift between them.
And i still think that Boromir's death is the best scene in the movie.
Then if you watch the trailer that was attached to the end of fellowship(its an easter egg on disk two) it shows a quick scene where someone in a cloak is approaching the sculpture holding Narsil. Also from the trailers I get the feeling that Arwen and some of Elronds people are at Helm's Deep. Bringing Narsil to Aragorn gives them an excuse for going there.

[b]Entil'Zah, I might be wrong but I think in the fellowship(the movie I mean) they never reforged the sword. Elrond says it can be reforged, but only Aragorn can wield it, and then Aragorn says he never wanted that power.

But the re-forging is brought up in the book. and it's in fellowship if i recall (i'm re-reading it again as soon as i'm done with my current book)
In the movie (orig cut) You see the sword in pieces, and then the next thing you know, Aragorn's using it.
At least in the special edition, they mention the re-forging, even if they don't show it.

In the book, Narsil IS reforged into Anduril, but in the movie, it was not.
Yes, I think that Arwen is coming in place of one of Elrond's sons in the Two Towers, probably to deliver 2 things, one of them being Anduril.
On a personal note, I don't like this change in the story. Part of the whole idea was that Aragorn set out from Rivendell with as the King returning, with the sword reforged. But, we'll see how they handle it, maybe it will be for the better.
[b]No, it is NOT reforged, he never uses Narsil, if you look, the hilt of the sword he uses in the movie IS NOT the same at all. Look when Boromir gives the ring back to Frodo, you get a good look at the sword when Aragorn relases his grip, it has a round pummel and a "flat" hand guard, whereas narsil has a more rounded hand guard, and the same "flat" shape to the pummel and the ends of the hand guard.
In the book, Narsil IS reforged into Anduril, but in the movie, it was not.

I'll have to watch again and look more closely, I thought for sure that it was the same sword. Guess i didn't look close enough.

I did find a website with a bunch of screen caps from the two towers trailer..and he definatly has a different sword than the one in fellowship, which they say is Anduril..if so, they changed the hilt from what Narsil is, which is entirely possible, but kind of odd..and the blade does not reflect red with the design etched in..if they mess that up I'll be unhappy..while i'm on THAT topic.. Glamdring (Gandalf's sword) is ALSO SUPPOSED TO GLOW BLUE..that REALLY bugged me...I guess it was supposed to make sting more special..
BTW- IMHO the sound, even Dolby Digital, in the extended version is another order of magnitude better than what was on the "theatrical" release...they used the rear channels a LOT more effectively, and the entire soundstage/positioning seems broader and more well placed.

The sound was great, But i turn mine up so that it knocks dishes off the walls. the neighbors walls...

In the little booklet that comes with the collectors edition, it has an interview with Peter Jackson. He states that New Line wanted him to remove that scene to help trim the movie to below 3 hours, his agreement was that he would, only if they promised to release the extended DVD before The Two Towers. That way there was a chance to explain to viewers what gifts were given before they are used in the second movie.
