SDRAM vs DDR RAM

RhettRhett (Not even a monkey)
Best Buy is currently selling a 128 MB stick of PC100 SDRAM for 8 bucks... I was wondering what is the cost/benifit to go with DDR RAM as opposed to the SDRAM. I have 200 some MB of RAM alread, just want to boost it up a little more... BTW, the 256MB PC2100 DDr RAM is 45 bucks. Is it worth it (not that I have the money, but for in the future... Yes its worth it. However, you can't just buy a stick of DDR and expect it to work with a board that only has SDR DRAM slots. It won't fit. SDR has 168 pins whereas DDR has 184. This isn't really an issue because nearly every new motherboard out there requires DDR RAM anyways!

  • Yeah, what vertigo 1 said, you can't mix n match DDR with SDRAM, even if you have one of those motherboards that has slots for either kind, you can only have one at a time in there.

Basically, all new motherboards require DDR or Rambus RAM because CPUs and bus speeds are now fast enough that SDRAM is a bottleneck.

It's scary because SDRAM used to be the baddest boy on the block Hell, I remember drooling over 256K chips because I had so little memory in my system.

Check your system board and see what it takes. Getting the wrong chip will waste your time, and depending on the return policy, your money too.

But that blazing fast machine was switchable from 4.77 mhz to 7.44mhz, yanno, it was the blinding speed that got me hooked.
