Be nice to have! But what the hell would you do with it?

Take it out for a test flight and get accidentally shot down.

Hey, now that would be cool. I could buzz the spray planes over West Auckland, or the Habour Bridge at rush hour.

Aye, the annual air show there is great. They have a banner around the tower:

"World's Busiest Control Tower."

The simple act of flying in has to be rather tightly controlled, with planes landing every minute or so. Just amazing.

• It'd be fantastic, but the airways of Great Britain are far too controlled for that kind of aircraft to be allowed off the runway...

• The new Nissan Skyline is only around the 50k mark, as well... though a lot more fun than a jet

I believe thats for military aircraft only, I dont know of any Mig 19 flyers but they may let you get away with rough transonic, but I know high speed is banned for environmental reasons, its the justification given for no transcontinental flights by the Concord.

well if you have the balls,

park your plane at a coastal city, do exhaustive pre-flights and maintenance on your ancient plane and take it out over international waters...

you can 'boom' out there as much as you like
• Now it's up to 180k, and the reserve is met...

Yeah, maintenance on that thing would be a HUGE pain in the rear...not to mention a bit costly, because the parts would probably have to be imported from who knows where.

Possibly even need to get black market parts...that thing must be hard to keep up.

I assume it doesn't come with air to air missiles

Actually, it comes with a fair amount of spare parts. Plus, the engine only has 250 hours on it.

It also comes with air-to-air missile rails too. *grins*

these old birds are positively dangerous... some old warbirds, mustangs, sea furies, and the numerous Yaks etc have service to flight ratios of ten to one, ie ten hours under a spanner to every hour under the pilots control.

thats only compounded by the ammount of highly sophisticated avionics on board something like a milspec 1960's/70's jet.

trust me, this thing is more trouble than its worth.

nice dream but no thanks, it's a hole in the runway into which you pour money or its an exceptionally high speed coffin/cremation furnace

Yeah, Running a Mig-21 would be a nightmare, but I know that while the WW-II birds are not THAT expesive, depending on what your talking about.

I dont know about the Mustang or Sea Furies, but things a PBY Catalina are (realitivly) inexpensive to run, I mean more then standard light aviation, but its inline with costs of running a big twin.

There is a guy who owns both a B-25 and a B-26, and he doesnt fly the 26 at all, its a tricky aircraft, but the 25 is expensive, but still, its not as insane a cost as running any jet.
