Christian.

I'm amazed at the civility of this forum, so I'll open up a bit. This may be more than you wanted Argone, but...

(takes a deep breath)...

I believe that there is one true God, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, the great I AM.

I believe He created this universe and everything in it with His spoken Word.

I believe He created Man (both male and female) as free-willed individuals and longs for a intimate and personal relationship with each individual.

I believe He loves us so much, that He was willing to allow a part of Himself to suffer and die so that we could have an eternal relationship with Him.

I believe that Jesus Christ is the only begotten Son of God.

I believe the only way to have a relationship with God and be saved from the damnation we create for ourselves is to admit our stubborness and error in trying to save ourselves, confess to everyone that Jesus is the only means of being saved, and being submersed completely in water to demonstrate the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus.

I believe there is an enemy who is actively seeking to harm and deceive us. I also believe that he has already lost that battle.

I believe that God has spoken to many people in the past, and that he has seen fit to inspire many authors to write down His desires in the book we call the Bible.

(deep breath)

Am I a Bible thumper? I don't think so. Usually the term is used to describe someone who keeps pointing to the Bible to show others their guilt. Thank God that's not my job; I'm a sinner who can not convict anyone.

The term is also used to describe people who use the Bible to save people. Again, thank God, that's not my job either; Jesus already did that.

I am a person who believes that the Bibble is a book to be taken seriously, and that it describes the nature of the one true God.

I always thought that was kinda arrogant, assuming we humans are so important that we can conjur such a thing, I mean what about the rest of the universe?

Wel, considering a huge part of christian faith (and a big factor behind a lot of the instituition's resistances to scientific theories, IE: The copernican solar system et cetera) is the belief that man is unique and created in god's image, everything else (including woman, depending on what version you read) is just some beast made to help man in his dominion over nature.

Of course, this is an over-generalization, but I'm speaking in instituitional terms.

Wouldn't this be considered arrogance to some ?

Their is also a saying that comes from this that woman was made from Adams rib.

Not his foot, to be below him.
Or his head, to be above him.

But his body, so she would be equal to him!

I use to think, in many ways still do, that most Religions were some of the Greatest scams around, for instance....

If you give me you trust and money you will be saved after you die, by a great and most powerful being, that is all around you and you can't see.

But he tell me what to tell you to do, and right now he want you to give me your money!

Then to add to the He is a most mercyful God but you'll fry in hellfires for eating meat on friday or having to work on the Sabbath?

Or having a jihad against a group of people just because they don't believe the same as you do. But they say their religion is peaceful?

I could go on but the point is I wonder why what is wrote in sacred text and what is done in all religions is never the same thing.

Me I guess I'am like what Dr.Franklin said a reformist. I believe in a creator and from time to time he comes to check up on us and leave some sort of clues to what is going on or what we should do.

But I doubt that many of the so called religions have a clue to what it really is.

Well thats my opinion and we all know that opinions are like assholes everyones got one and they all stink!

Well Argone,

That's why I said what I said above...

The state of "Westernized Christianity" is appalling even to some of us in the West...

• Good Point Argone..... But not all Religions are not like that.

Like a stated Religion is a Good way to Controll People... Some parts good some parts bad.... But we are begining to get to the point where we do not need Religion anymore.

Some of us would argue that we never needed religion to begin with. That the whole point was faith, not religion.

religions start to make the unknown and unfathomable palatable to us.

Give reason for existence, give reason for the good and bad things beyond our ken.

"Why did my hubby get struck by lightning ?"

"Because he did some bad things and God punished him."

Thats easier to take than, "He was standing in the wrong place at the wrong time."

Religion steps in where our own internal faith and belief in living, the universe and everything, fails. Or atleast thats how it should be.

It's when it turns into, "My kung fu is better than your kung fu that the evils of religion show up. "

Ivanova 5:62

"And the lord sayeth upon to the faithful

'Let my subjects of the colour green spread upon the universe, and liveth freely with the comelyl asses of virtue true.'

'If the minions of purple shall rear their accursed heads, the minions of green shal smite them with their Staves, and stabbeth them with their pointed sticks.'

and so the lord saw that this was good...

and there was much rejoicing.

and the people feasted on the lambs and the carps and the sloths and the baboons and the anchovies and the breakfast cereals and the fruit bats..."
• I agree with the separated view on religion and faith/believe as mentioned earlier. Also, I separate religion (in the cultural meaning) from its institutional realization (ie church).

Now
- church: none
- religion: interested in many, especially as inspiration... but not very active in searching
- believe: I believe that each human and humankind as a whole could at least start achieving enlightenment if we just stopped reacting in an almost-mechanical way to other people's actions (and I believe that it helps if each of us starts with him-/herself)

BTW: B5 (besides other influences) has started me thinking about many things also in this respect, and I am sure it can do it to many people, too. As JMS put it: "If Star Trek's shining element was that it got people involved in the space program, perhaps B5's shining element is that it gets people involved in the human program."
