Tech Support: DVD-Drive problems...

Alllrighty, I'm getting fed up with this drive...
the drive I have is a Toshiba SD-M1612, not the one I ordered, but it DID work, so I didn't call up and complain.
well...it worked right after I put my PC together. played DVDs no problem.
didn't watch any DVDs for quite awhile, say a month, tried again, and it wouldn't work...By not working I mean sound was VERY choppy, and there was no video (The menu would show up so long as there was no movment in the menu).
Audio CDs, and CD Roms work no problem
things I've figured out:
its NOT my sound card. compleatly uninstalled the drivers for it, same errors.
its NOT my video card, uninstalled drivers for that as well, and updated them...
soooit has to be the drive...but what? *sigh*
Any suggestions guys?
Running WinXP Pro, latest Direct X, Geforce 3 Ti 200 @ 128MB, 512 megs DDR, AMD AThlon XP 1800+ @ 1.1 ghz.
thanks!

Although... you've checked to make sure that the DMA box is checked for your drive in Device Manager?

I've never had any trouble with PowerDVD other than the squeaky sound system in the version I have. WinDVD, in my experience, does not play well with WinXP. I get exactly the symptoms that A#s described on most of my DVDs.

If you want the best player possible, You should get a hardware player, i've got a hardware mpeg decoder for my dvd drive, and i've never had a single problem, plus it outputs Dolby Digital 5.1 and DTS via digital coax.

A hardware player is not even in the range of possibilities unless it is not region locked.

AFAIK you can get region hacks for them. But like i said, I've had this hardware decoder for 4 years now, and have never had a single bit of a problem.
As for your squeaky sound Biggles, check in your audio properties and make sure Auxilary is muted. If it isn't it tends to leave a low volume high pitched background noise. It happened on mine and I fixed it by muting it. Not sure if it is the same prob you have.
