I'm with you on that one, I think, Jambo - if you want to put her on the list then you should equally put down those people who stand in the highstreet collecting money for charity; but I bet they, at least, go home to their children at the end of the day...

At least tell me that Margaret Thatcher was one of them.
Churchill would be a good bet... what about John Locke, who gave so much to the American revolutionary thinking, and liberalism as a whole?

You've got to be kidding...
At least tell me that Margaret Thatcher was one of them.
Thankfully she didnt make the top ten so she can't be voted the "Greatest" Brit of all time... thank god.
she doesnt deserve the labels you've given her.
"before you judge someone, walk a mile in thier shoes."
she was a long way from an angel, but I'd like to see some of you detractors live her life and respond impeccably...
next you'll tell me 'Liz' is the perfect mother in law... Charlie the model husband... Camilla a perfect saint...
as far as the greatest Briton goes ?
Queen Elizabeth the first...
if being a pretty selfless and truly British Briton is your criteria.
fortunately what drove him was not personal. His motives were for the greater good.
he was also a very gifted and clever man, worthy of a great deal of respect.
He is perhaps the only reason America joined the War when it did. This is of course quite inflammatory to suggest, but I doubt Americans would have even lifted a finger until the bombs rained down on Washington or perhaps the Germans landed in Canada...if it wasnt for the chain smoking, depressive, little pug dog named Winston.
That much is historical fact - I don't think you've said anything inflammatory Boxer; if people can't accept it then it sounds more like a personal problem to me.
The U-Boat attacks took the war to the very borders of America, but US interests lay primarily in the Pacific, and it took Pearl Harbour to truly bring America into the global war.
Those are the events, but no one can deny that the personalities of the time played a major role as well, and I doubt history will forget Churchill anytime soon for his actions during that period.
Winston Churchill was a manipulative little toad, bent on power...

That's why I think he is one of the greatest. Noone is perfect, but at least he was thinking about more than just his own goals.

Who am I talking about?
Why, none other than that mighty, walking hair-sallon of a man - David Beckham.
By the way, if he does get a place I may turn inside-out.
Cherio.
