How many of you guys are car nuts?

FreejackFreejack Jake the Not-so-Wise
Just asking, if so what kind of car do you guys own or would like to own?

I have a 1979 Mustang Cobra, which is currently tore all the way down to the bare chassis, getting a complete rebuild.

My other car is a 1987 Merkur XR4Ti. That’s the same as a Ford Serria XR4i for you guys across the pond, except its got a turbo 2.3l engine.

I'm a sports car nut. My first car was a 1958 MGA, when most of my friends were driving drag cars. I now have an old 1970 Porsche 914-6. Pictures here. This is my 3rd Porsche. I've owned a 1965 911 brought over here from Germany by the first owner a year before Porsche began importing 911's to the U.S., and a 1966 912.

I’ve also owned an MG 1100 4-door (fun car – like a Mini), an MGB, and three Karmann Ghias – one with a hotrod 1800cc engine and a tweaked suspension. Also owned a funny little Fiat 600 that kept blowing head gaskets, and a Fiat Sports Coupe.

I'm torn about what my dream car should be. There are many I like. But I'd probably end up with a Porsche. I've been into them since high school when I saw my first 356.

I've only owned two cars and both were really crappy and are not even worth mentioning here. Currently I don't have a car at all. I'd like to have a nice car though like a Dodge Viper, Corvette Z06, or some nice and stylish old classic. Something modest like that.

Cars are a genetic thing for me, my family is pure petrolhead.

Dad has four Model 'T' Fords from 1912 to 1927. Our Acre block is basically one big car yead.

I run Minis, 1100cc (68cui),95mph and naught but a well driven Subaru WRX has a chance of keeping up with me in the hills.

As far as dream cars go, they are inumerable, if I was fiscally omnipotent I'd have a 400 space parking garage stuffed with my 'mounts'.

    Sports Car = McLaren F1
    Muscle car = 1969 427 BOSS Mustang
    Cruiser = 1959 Cadiallac Convertible
Lead Sled = 1972 Lincoln Town Car
    Road Bike = Triumph Daytona
    Cruiser Bike = Valkyrie
    Off Road/Hybrid Bike = BMW

I should also make mention I do like Porsches and that's 'Poursh -a', two syllables not one.

When all is said and done tho, I like my Minis.
  • RandyRandy Master Storyteller
Me too. I've lusted after Mini's for probably thirty years - maybe more. Though it's not the real thing, I do like BMW's new UK-built Mini - VERY tempting. I'm also a big WRX fan - also VERY tempting.

Too bad we don't live in the same neighborhood, Shadow-man. It'd be fun chasing each other around the hills.

First off I'll agree, the build quality leaves a bit to be desired, but the pay-off is awesome. Running those backwood blacktops down along the Missouri river bluffs, thats what that car was made for...

This is also the same chassis that Cosworth used to win several WRC titles in the late eighties.

My Wife is seriously looking at the US Mini...I think they look cool as well. Does anyone know any bad points about them??
  •
Originally posted by Ricobirch:

I have to agree with freejack. The Merkur is a good car. It is temperamental if you don't like to take REALLY good care of it but if you treat it right it is one of the greatest cars of it's time, and it was way ahead of it's time (imho). Just look at how many (considering how few were produced) are still running and have over 300K miles.

I'm a glutton for punishment when it comes to difficult cars. I had a Merkur and I have an '87 Saab 900 now. Both demand attention, but are fantastic cars in the long run.

I love driving my Saab up the canyons with snow tires on passing losers in their "unstoppable" urban assault vehicles (SUV's) that are stuck in snow banks on the side of the road. Hehehe.

SUV's are my pet peeve, people who drive them around the city and don't do Jeep Safaris are full of it. Most of them are just making up for a flat chest or a small… yea and enjoy being up high relative to anyone else. I think private SUV owners should be allowed to drive their ego boosters but should be forced to pay a hefty tax on the unnecessary pollution they create. They should also be charged more by insurance companies because their bumpers are not at a safe height for the rest of us and do more damage in accidents than they should.

Um... That was a tangent... the Merkur isn't that bad of a car. Just don't expect the Korean car mentality of welding the hood shut for 75K miles then throwing the car away after that.

yes, thats my dream vehicle, its an big, armored recon APC, and no I dont live in the freaking suburbs (yet, they are getting closer every day though) I plan on moving further out if I can get away with it.

my family has routinely put vehicles in strange situations and I want one where I have a chance to survive a fall into a 50 meter revene and the dingo can do it.

My other dream cars are the a new Deville DTS (My mother owns a 1989 Deville) slightly be low that is the CTS (it looks cool)

The next car I get, probably a 1998-00 Passat, somewhere in that range, since they are also incredibly safe cars.
  • I don’t have my Scorpio (realy a Granada) anymore. I had to sell it when I left DC for school. I know: what a strange car to buy for High School, right? Well, a military family friend had brought it from overseas (Germany) and I bought it for cheep when he found how hard it was to get parts state side. Oh, but it gets even stranger. This guy, I don't know how, got an '87 European spec (that's right no central eye level break light etc.) on to US soil. Now I could have sworn that was illegal, but he was high brass and every time I got it inspected in VA none of the bozo's had a clue.

You want specs? 1987, 2.0I SI, Five-Door (very cool), five speed manual (the only way to go), power frigging almost everything, Black with Raven interior (boring but traditional for the Scorpio). God, that was a heavy car...

I just wish he had had one of the lumbering 2.5 Turbo Diesel Taxi models, that would have been fun, slow but fun. I fell in love with them when I was in Stuttgart, and always wanted one so that was my chance. Funny thing is I sold it to a guy who was going back to Europe in like six months and didn't understand that it would be easier to buy a car there than ship mine… but I didn't care, he offered more than I wanted.

Most memorable moment: when I backed into a pole and cracked the lenses in the back. I screamed so loud… I just knew there was no way I was going to get replacements in the US. I never did fix it. There was just no way that I could find to do it that I could afford.

The '90 model ones are cool looking cars, but I'm happy with my Saab, I must have something for cars from 1987...

Have you done anything, interesting to your 2.3l? Merkur owners seem to like to tinker...
