Linux, hmm... Can you run two operating systems on a PC (i.e. WinXP and a version of Linux). Also, what is a good kind (for lack of better word)of Linux to get? Just want it to try out, maybe surf the web, ect... Thanks.

if you partition your hard drive right.

boot partition of linux often has to be first, then Win partition, then a globulous Linux partion, and don't forget a Swap partition for Linux. That will almost always work.

As for web browser - go with Mozilla.

As for IM - no idea - I don't have Linux installed on this comp.

As for nVidia video drivers (if you need them), make sure you follow all the install steps (including editing the x-win config file) before restarting x-win!

As for Linux type, I've used Redhat and SuSe - I like the SuSe default install better, but everything is customizable so its up to you. Redhat is pretty standard and you can download it from MANY locations. Just have to have a CD burner

I'll start with rhett's first...

So far I've used red Hat 7.2 and now currently Mandrake 8.2 . I'm sure there other good ones out there.

Both can be easily installed as a dual boot if you already have Windows installed, using LILO as your Boot Loader.

Now to Croxis's questions...

I recommend Mozilla for a Web Browser, usually comes with RH and Mandrake, probably other distributions as well.

Instant Messenger you can use AIM and install the plugins for MSN, Yahoo, AOL, ICQ etc...

Things to get are a good book on Linux. Also remember to always log in as ROOT user when installing new software, not just Super User (or Switch User for those who are perfectionists).

A question at this point is "Why did you install it, and what do you intend to use it for?" This will get you closer to the answer of what else you need to get.

We had a thread for Linux going here started by John Walker, maybe I should go bump it. Beyond that for sources of Linux executables do a Google search, I've found plenty of cool sites (too many to name here).

Others out here should know newsgroups and such for Linux questions...

Web Browser -- Mozilla or Opera

Instant Messanger, gAIM or gICQ work well

You can ask me any questions you want, I'm more of a FreeBSD user, but i've used linux lots.

You constantly say that, and yet you constantly give no reasoning to back up the statement.

Question: Is it easy to do a dual boot? Because, I just want to have something quick and easy, as I am not a really big tech experiance. Thanks.
• croxiscroxis I am the walrus
Yes, rhett, it is easy to dual boot. You have two options, install a new hard drive OR create room on your current drive for another partition. First defrag you windows drive. Most big-name linux install programs have a very good partitioner to add the extra partition while keeping your existing partition intact. You can also make space with a nice program at http://www.ranish.com/part/ . Very easy to use. Just shrink your windows partition down and then add a linux partition and a linux swap partition. Linux comes with a multi-OS boot loader or you can search for XOSL. You still need to install the boot loader for linux though.

Thanks croxis. I think I will download Redhat 8.0 now... I'll let you know how it goes...

Because Linux is in fact the Windows of the Unix world, unless of course you use it without the pretty GUI.

I have no problem with linux, but its basically a version of unix to appeal to Windows or Mac users, to people who feel the need for a GUI for everything.

The only time i use a GUI on my FreeBSD machine, is when my Windows machine is otherwise occupied and i need a web browser.

And then of course there is the major reason that FreeBSD is better..

Linux...

oh come on... Many Unix flavors use X Windows based environments and Window managers to give the user a GUI. You're just being obnoxious...

SGI Irix uses a GUI heavily, Sun Sparcs do, the Net BSD I ran on my Amiga years ago used X Windows even...

Linux was created to give people a free Unix style OS because of the stupid way AT&T held control of Unix, much like how SEA tried to monopolize ARC after the fact, or Compuserve's asshole reaction to GIF that started the PNG movement.

Linux is so much more Unix thn it is MS Windows by a long shot.

The only resemblence to Windows is the way the GUI sits on top of the Command Line like DOS and Windows 3.1x, but you could say the same thing of your precious FreeBSD...

Because you favor Command Line usage makes no arguement for Linux being inferior...
• RhettRhett (Not even a monkey)
Who would that be? hehehe
• BigglesBiggles <font color=#AAFFAA>The Man Without a Face</font>
I spend most of my linux time in a command line. My linux computer doesn't even have X Windows installed. And you can do everything with the command line, just like in BSD. And how does having a GUI make it like Windows?
Your argument is pretty weak.

Look at the pictures, that says it all

I was just kidding anyway, its all personal preferance.

But as for the command line, you are missing my point, Any Unix can USE X, but most flavours of Linux use it by default.

For a mission critical server, i'd just perfer a flavour of BSD, its been more stable for me, Our linux server at work has had nothing but problems, while my FreeBSD server is stable as a rock.

My FreeBSD server.. isengard# uptime
7:07am up 289 days, 17:32,

So for me, its a stability issue.
I've run Slackware, Debian, Redhat and Cobalt linux, and have always had problems with all of them. wheras i've run FreeBSD, OpenBSD, and BSDi and never had a stability problem.

so for a home workstation, yeah i'd run Linux, but for a mission critical server, No way.

Plus, Chicks dig FreeBSD

I don't quite understand your point Entil'Zha. Why do you want to keep doing everything hard way by writing commands in the command line instead of using easy, convenient and nice looking environment where you can do the same much more easily and faster by using a mouse in addition of a keyboard??? I can understand that if you want to have the know-how of the command line usage because of work or whatever other reason, but still why would you use only the command line for all the everyday tasks and such?

Linux unstable??? How in the earth have you been running it??? Linux is famous of being stable! That's one of the biggest reasons why it's widely used in servers in the first place, security issues being an other. That's the first time ever I've heard anyone saying that Linux is unstable.

• JackNJackN <font color=#99FF99>Lightwave Alien</font>
The reason to run a lean Kernel, and no GUI/XWindows/Desktop etc is to keep overhead to a minimum on a server. Thing is though, you can do that just as easily on Linux as you can with other Unix flavors...
