thats frikkin stoopid... welcome to the new arms race, proliferation of little nuclear hot spots all over the world where the US has 'spanked' some nasty little dictator/terrorist.

    stupid shit, truly stupid shit

the dixie cups did buckets of damage to Tora Bora, and there are always ways of making conventional weapons bite harder.

or of course the US could put its dick where its mouth is and actually commit troops to dig out little problems like Osama et al. Of course there isnt a President with enough balls/politically suicidal tendencies to do so.

Nothing fights wars better than frikkin soldiers. You can only do so much by flinging shit down from on high...

Actualy gents, this has been going on for a while, both the US and the old Soviet Union did alot of R&D on deep penetrating warheads, because both sides located their emergency command bunkers underground.

There is nothing new about this idea, hell Popular Mechanics itself covered it in the past.

Damn things still havent been built (well unless you consider what we came up with in the 90's) , and even then THEY wouldnt be that effective

Nuclear weapons release ALOT of energy, its true, but damn packed dirt and rock absorb alot of energy too, and worse yet there is A HELL OF ALOT OF IT!.

Frankly I think its more for deterence effect again then anything else.
  • I don't see what you are objecting about.

We are not talking about regular bombs here. These are 0.1 Kiloton bombs about the size of a house cat. If the bomb penetrated to 230 ft deep, then the explosion would be 1/100th of teh size of "Fat Boy"

Now obviously these are not weapons to be used anywhere neer cities, but most of the bunkers talked about in the article are in the middle of nowhere.

And if they are used in this way I don't see any reason why they shouldn't be used when conventional "Bunker Busters" fail.

  • fallout anyone?
  • Fallout is negligible. IN 1964 the US coducted a test of a similar weapon in Nevada.

Yes there was fallout, but it was a small enough amount that unless you were sepcificlly looking for it, you wouldn't notice it.
