It can't last. Greece is a member of the World Trade Organization. That law violates the import/export tariffs requirements under free trade based on the WTO charter. WTO can overturn it (or rather throw so many tarrifs on Greece that they will sink unless they overturn it themselves).
• If the people of Greece are free to vote in open elections and a majority in Greece support it so be it.

Why are you so quick to talk about tarifs etc? What right do you have to inflict change on them if it's thier own want and doing? No one is making you travel or move to Greece.

I suspect this law will pass away soon also if it truely is as poorly drafted as ZDNet (a biased source) indicates, that is how it should work.

Rather than this law I would advocate social responcibility and self control. Or if that fails US western style justice and total freedom: you are free to be rude and play your beeping games, talk loudly on your cellphone, and blow smoke in my face from you cancer sticks; but I should also be allowed to punch you in the face for effecting my life in a negative way. "Can't we all just get along" and show some respect for others.

There has good to be more to the rational for this law than is meeting the eye for those of us not in Greece.

I highly doubt they had a general election based solely on this one law.

Actually refering to the WTO forcing changes on European contries, I might point out that the WTO has forced more law changes on the US then any European country. I'll name a few:

- Importation (into the US) of specific grade fuel has been overturned based on that "Not all contries can afford to mine and refine that grade of low emmision fuel"
- Tuna importation (into the US) cannot be based on the method of catching the Tuna, only on whether it is Tuna (thus eliminating the US law against catching Tuna with nets that can also catch Daulphins)

Should I go on? I know there are a WHOLE batch more. Most of these laws overturned by the WTO have been in relation to South America vs the US, but some have been Europe vs the US...

I might also point out that the precurser to WTO failed becuase the US wouldn't join it even though the whole of Europe did...becuase of precisely this sort of ability to overturn internal laws.

What gives the WTO the right to overturn any

sovereign nations laws?

What if Greece for instance told them to take a flying leap.

Interesting bit of stupidity, though...

Argone: That is becuase the countries signed onto the WTO charter that gives the WTO such athority. I don't think WTO should really have all that authority, but they do.

Whoa! thats kinda scary wayyy to much power for a select few.

Concerning the WTO and this law in Greece. I really dought the WTO has any jurisdiction here. If Greece had banned only games that were produced in say the US, but allow games made in Greece, or from the EU, that would fall under WTO rules (IE promoting fair trade). But if a country bans a product completely, and is not favoring one product over another, I don't believe there is anything any the WTO or any other organization can do.

• TyvarTyvar Next best thing to a St. Bernard
Yeup, since its a total ban on a product the WTO probably wont do anything about it.

Anyways the WTO is in alot of heat not just from the left here (the US), but more and more our own domestic laws are getting mucked with, including our tax laws now mainly at the instigation of europe. At the grass roots level droping out of the WTO is starting to sound like an attractive position, and if more actual conservatives (and not just buisness whores) get elected, dont be suprised if there are rumblings about in on capital hill

This is the problem with international communities: They always want to f*ck with soveirgn nations laws. This sucks about Greece, but it is there responsibility to fix a matter like this.
• croxiscroxis I am the walrus
I heard that over 10 000 Greeks protested the law. I'm not sure how, its just a rumor.

• I have seen other links about it, and heard from greeks, it is true. Several clans have had to close until further notice, and in theory they can arrest a NON GREEK if you are playing a game in greece, even on a cell phone. Since that would cause a potentially embarrassing international incident though I doubt it would ever happen.

There is no way the law can last, people in Greece will not allow it.
• PJHPJH The Lovely Thing
That's got to be bull. No country can make a law like that. It's impossible and most probably against their constitution. It's like making a law that people would have no right to run anymore or wear a hat. No western democratic government can create such law and if some people would be so utterly stupid as to attempt doing something like that, they'd be kicked out of their jobs and probably be forced in mental examination. That sounds like a WWII era Nazi stuff, or something a country like Irak or Iran could do. I don't believe that at all.
