They didn't have spring steel, but the high carbon content made the blades pretty fexible in their own right, they are just a lot thicker than a rapier. That and the dual tempering..the spine is a softer temper than the edge, which means the blade can flex to absorb shock, but the edge will hold and remain sharp..there is actually a line on the blade where the temper zones meet, called the Harmon. When the blade is polished, the polisher accents the temper line by using a soft stone (I don't remember which one) which gives the lower, harder part of the blade that milky, "frosted" look...a lot of the $99 "katanas" use a simple, repeating acid stencil to simulate this.
You can have a katana custom ordered from japan, folded, tempered, polished, and fitted in the full traditional way for around 7,000, with a year and a half waiting list or something like that. The pics I have seen of the swords are amazing tho.. To coin maglite, A work of art that works

WHEN this bb is in charge of not ramming sattelites into other large bodies then you can argue about maths.... until then ....
"Look at the Grasshopper and how it hops, not how its spincter tightens slightly every time it does....."
grrrrr....
And yeah... the line is called the hamon... and basically the hamon is the Smiths chance to express the strength of his aesthetic style, the division between the Ji, the hard edge of the blade and the Ha the soft rear casing can be as sharp and clear as black and white or nebulous like clouds or mist, and everything in between.
This line forms when the blade is differentially tempered, a layer of 'special' clay is applied to the whole blade, about 1/4" thick. The Smith then carefully removes it from the cutting edge of the blade, graduating the removal of the clay back towards the back of the blade.... the point where the clay stops marks where the Ji and Ha begin and end, the Hamon line...
The blade is then heated to ther Smiths preferred shade of cherry red.... and quenching is 'magick water'.... the clay slows the cooling process where it covers the blade... and as a results the metal is soft, where the blade is uncovered and in contact with the water it is cooled almost instantaneously and the result is the super hard edge steel.
Thats how you get two steels effectively in the same blade.
Spring steel is another animal again, no katana flexes even close to that of a foil, which, by any good standard should be able to withstand being bent around so the tip meets the base of the hilt...
A katana is a slicer and to an extent a chopper.... not a thruster/slasher, different style of use, very different blades as result.
I have a nice mild steel practise sword here, blunt as buggery, ( I make no apology for the pun),but it's beautifully weighted (thanks to about 5 floz of lead poured into the hollow hilt), and I forged it to suit my particular style of swordplay.
It will never hold a good edge, it was never meant to so it does not cut cleanly, I can guarantee that whatever type of new arse it would 'create' it wouldn't be pretty...
