Very very few blades were genuine old Samurai/Feudal era blades and most times they belonged to old Samurai families who happened to have Officers in the Army.
Get it appraised mate. If you have a 'real' one you could buy several houses with the proceeds of its sale. If not you have a pretty cool bit of militaria.
Have a look at the quality of the furniture, ( the tsuba/guard, the hilt etc), if that looks cheap or mass produced chances are the blade will be too. Also look for temper lines. There should be a fairly distinct difference between the back half/two thirds of the blade and the cutting edge. The line between these two areas is also important, if it is very even and symetrical then it may be a 'cheap' blade, but if the line is 'interesting' having character and lots of movement or shapes and a distinctly 'hand made' feel then you may have a real prize. There are legends about lost WW2 blades, perhaps that's all they are but still....
its worth the peace of mind.
some other company has been making those things for awhile, only theirs looked much better (The blades anyway)

Yeah, I've seen that. Their blades are strong enough to have proper swordfights with as well.

Who? What? Where? I want one !!!
One thing - if you are looking to get a japanese sword polished, and don't know the value, have it appraised first! If it is valuable, and you want it polished, it would be worth the money to have it done by a reputable professional polisher of japanese weapons. The polishing procedure is an art form in and of itself, and can make or break the value of any sword.
Add one of these and you can be the biggest geek on your block!
No! I most certainly don't have these.
... yet. I have to save up.

Darm! I want an origional Sumari Sword but the Japanese goverment is set on buying all of the origional ones that come on the market!
there is one well propogated myth about Katana and other Japanese traditional blades. Even the absolute best Smiths didn't fold thier blades as much as is often quoted. There is a little point of confusion that helps to muddy the waters as well. A good katana can have upto one million folded layers, but, thats a product of the process of folding.
If you fold the steel in half you get two layers, flatten it out and fold it again and you get four layers, flattening and folding that in turn nets you eight layers and so it goes. After six folds you have four million layers. In truth alot of Smiths stopped short of any more than six, because the layers became effectively invisible being so tightly grained. Aesthetics were as important as strength and cutting power.
The real technical excellence Japanese Smiths expressed was not so much in the folding, it was in the production of what were effectively composite blades, a soft but flexible outer shell and a super hard and consequently sharp edged core forged as one. They also used pure iron and carbon, no chrome-moly, vanadium or rare earths in a real Japanese blade.
Having said all that, I would love to see the reaction of some of the premier feudal Japanese Smiths, to a good Spanish Toledo Rapier or Foil...
The Japanese never knew anything about spring steel...

Hmmmmmm... Last time I checked 6 to the power of 2 (folding) came out to 64 layers...

Unless this is new math or something.

Passive fields. January two thousand and twelve. A nation that stands alone. Cold voices, faces pale, Gathered unto their judgement day. Such words remain unspoken. Such pride remains unbroken. Just mothers to stand in vain and cry. Tears and medals in the rain. Shall I recall when justice did prevail? No reason to be found why reason did fail. The all clear resounding. The way was clear to rebuild this land. Shall I call on you to guide me well, To see our hopes and dreams fulfilled? On this day of our ascension.

2+2=4
4+4=8
8+8=16
16+16=32
32+32=1024 and this is where most Smiths ( esp during times of War) stopped.
1024+1024=2048
2048+2048=4096
4096+4096=8192
8192+8192=16384
16384+16384=32768
32768+32768=65536
65536+65536=131072
131072+131072=262144
262144+262144=524288
524288+524288=1048576
at 16 folds you have over one million layers, twenty folds was usually the maximum, past this point and the carefully created layered grain just blended into each other, and while that means the steel is exceptionally strong, you could not tell it apart from the cheap nasty poorly forged stuff unless you were a Smith or someone with expectional knowledge...
forgive my enfeebled creative mind... unlike Jack here...
