I know I am a day early, but I wanted to start a thread to remember the anniversary of the attack on the Twin Towers, the Pentagon, and the plane crash in Pennsylvania.

Tomorrow, at the School where I work, we will have a Tree Planting ceremony to honor those who have fallen. As we have our moment of silence, I will be thinking also about the rest of the victims that result from this kind of terrible act.

Those who were left behind to survive the loss of their loved ones, those who have fallen victim of collateral damage due to war on terrorism, the victims who have passed on from the Anthrax infections, and those who have fallen in the past due to terrorism of all kinds. All of them should be remembered...

They say that Blood calls out for Blood, but I see only a vicious circle of hatred and murder, and I wonder if we will ever break the chain and come together in peace for good and for ever.

For the victims...

It's not, in significant measure, about outgrowing vengeance; take most Palestinians -- passive resistors whose problems persist because a faction amidst the big oil crowd believes it is in their best interests that Greater Israel become a reality. Once power is put back in the hands of the majority - or more precisely: we make informed use of our democratic rights - and resources fairly distributed then we will see, in large measure, an end to violence and a beginning of prosperity.

Well, Warble, I would agree that dwelling on this is only harmful, a licking of wounds, and a credit to our inability to learn from history. IMO, this is the real tragedy -- that the road to further misery has been paved.

**a nod to those who died**

~~~
I am so over this Anniversary already. I really do hate the ghoulish media... and sometimes there seems to be something deep in the collective American psyche that does like to wallow. It's hard to define, the entire nation seems to drop into the "Re-hab/AA weepy group hug" mode. Bawling about thier blood nose rather than getting up and snotting the guy who gave it to them.
I don't for a second think that the Anniversary is not important, far from it, but even me, who tends to get very deep and weepy on occasion, finds the 'collective reaction' of the US to be a bit soppy and blubbery. I dunno, it's sorta like the biggest kid in the school yard, ( the US) is so used to not even being slightly challenged by anyone else, gets punched in the nose by the smallest kid in the class, the US falls flat on its arse in shock and disbelief and bawls for Mommy.
I want to say "Suck it up and deal..." but I know alot of 'Yanks' would shout me down for dissing those who died. I dunno, you can only weep on a headstone so long... before you start looking flaky.
Perhaps that's just a media portrayl, perhaps the people on the ground arent quite so watery about it all. I wonder how many Americans may actually agree with me and because of common good sense, they don't stick thier neck out and say, "Hey people... due respect to the dead... but lets get on with it." I'd be willing to bet anyone expressing that kind of thought would be lynched.
• croxiscroxis I am the walrus
It is indeed sad that there were over 3000 deaths that day. No one deserves to die. But to put it into perspective... How many people die everyday from car accedents?
Or from alcohol related accedents?
Or from war raging in South America and Africa where children shoot automatic weapons?
The list goes on and on...............
• JackNJackN Lightwave Alien
Well... Before this thread gets Hijacked and turned into something I didn't intend, I'd just like to say that this time of rememberance and silence is for those who had nothing to do with political motive or media agenda.
A lot of innocent civilians get killed every day around the world as the expense for someone elses agenda, be it religion, politics, or just plain evil intent.
This thread is for the victims, not as a soap box for one's personal philosophy. I include all victims here, whether they be from the Oklahoma bombing, the Kenya Embassy, the USS Cole, or some nameless Womans child who caught a stray bullet between fighting warlords in some far away place.
Let's have some respect for those who have gone before us, and lets use this opportunity to sober up a little, and I do point a finger at the US in large part.
War has been a fact of life since man could throw rocks. It's not just something that started because of terrorists. Nothing of the sort.
It is a sad day.
We interrupt our regularly scheduled program to bring you the following special
bulletin.
Longitude: 74 degrees, 0 minutes, 23 seconds West.
Latitude: 40 degrees, 42 minutes, 51 seconds North.
Follow the sound of sirens.
Some things are beyond words.
Beyond comprehension.
Beyond forgiveness.
The questions come:
How could you let this happen?
Why didn't you know this was coming?
How do you say we didn't know? We couldn't know.
We couldn't imagine.
Only madmen could contain the thought, execute the act, fly the planes.
Even those we thought our enemies are moved. Because some things surpass
rivalries and borders.
Because the story of humanity is written not in towers but in tears.
In the common coin of blood and bone.
In the voice that speaks within even the worst of us, and says This is not
right.
Also here are those who face fire without fear or armor.
Those who step into the darkness without assurances of ever walking out again,
because they know there are others waiting in the dark.
Awaiting salvation.
Awaiting word.
Awaiting justice.
Ordinary men.
Ordinary women.
Made extraordinary by acts of compassion.
And courage.
And terrible sacrifice.
We've voted, and we're going to try to take the plane.
It's the only way to stop them hitting Washington.
I love you.
Ordinary men.
Ordinary women.
Refusing to surrender.
Ordinary men.
Ordinary women.
Refusing to accept the self-serving proclamations of holy warriors of every
stripe, who announce that somehow we had this coming.
...probably what we deserve....
All of them who have tried to secularize America...the pagans and the
abortionists
and the feminists and the gays and the lesbians and the ACLU....
I point the finger in their face and I say, "You helped this happen."
-- it is God's will that America should fall through their iniquity and
their sin --
We reject them both in the knowledge that our tragedy is greater than the sum
of our transgressions.
Bodies in freefall on the evening news.
Madness in mosques, shouting down fourteen centuries of earnest prayers,
forgetting the lessons of crusades past:
That the most harmed are the least deserving.
There are no words.
There are no words.
The death of innocents and the death of innocence.
Rage compounded upon rage. Rage enough to blot out the sun.
And the air still filled with questions.
Is it going to happen again?
What do I tell my children?
Why did this happen?
What do we tell the children?
Do we tell them the evil is a foreign face?
No. The evil is the thought behind the face, and it can look just like yours.
Do we tell them evil is tangible, with defined borders and names and geometries
and destinies?
No. They will have nightmares enough.
Perhaps we tell them that we are sorry.
Sorry that we were not able to deliver unto them the world we wished them to
have.
That our eagerness to shout is not the equal of our willingness to listen.
That the burdens of distant people are the responsibility of all men and women
of conscience, or their burdens will one day become our tragedy.
Or perhaps we simply tell them that we love them, and that we will protect
them. That we would give our lives for theirs and do it gladly, so great is
the burden of our love.
In a universe of Gameboys and VCRs, it is, perhaps, an insubstantial gift. But
it is the only one that will wash away the tears and knit the wounds and make
the world a sane place to live in.
We could not see it coming. No one could. We could not stop it. No one
could.
But we are still here. With you.
Today. Tomorrow. And the day after.
We live in each blow you strike for infinite justice, but always in the hope of
infinite wisdom.
Because we live as well in the quiet turning of your considered conscience.
The voice that says all wars have innocents.
The voice that says you are a kind and a merciful people.
The voice that says do not do as they do, or the war is lost before it is even
begun.
Do not let that knowledge be washed away in blood.
When you move, we will move with you. Where you go, we will go with you.
Where you are, we are in you.
Because the future belongs to ordinary men and ordinary women, and that future
must be built free of such acts as these, must be fought for and renewed like
fresh water.
Because a message must be sent to those who mistake compassion for weakness. A
message sent across six thousand years of recorded blood and struggle.
And the message is this:
Whatever our history, whatever the root of our surnames, we remain a good and
decent people, and we do not bow down and we do not give up.
The fire of the human spirit cannot be quenched by bomb blasts or body counts.
Cannot be intimidated forever into silence or drowned by tears.
We have endured worse before; we will bear this burden and all that come after,
because that's what ordinary men and women do. We persevere.
No matter what.
This has not weakened us.
It has only made us stronger.
In recent years we as a people have been tribalized and factionalized by a
thousand casual unkindnesses.
But in this we are one.
Flags sprout in uncommon places, the ground made fertile by tears and shared
resolve.
We have become one in our grief.
We are now one in our determination.
One as we recover.
One as we rebuild.
You wanted to send a message, and in so doing you awakened us from our self
involvement.
Message received.
Look for your reply in the thunder.
In such days as these are heroes born. The true heroes of the twenty-first
century.
You, the human being singular.
You, who are nobler than you know and stronger than you think.
You, the heroes of this moment chosen out of history.
We stand blinded by the light of your unbroken will. Before that light, no
darkness can prevail.
They knocked down two tall towers. In their memory, draft a covenant with your
conscience, that we will create a world in which such things need not occur.
A world which will not require apologies to children, but also a world whose
roads are not paved with the husks of their inalienable rights.
They knocked down two tall towers. Graft now their echo onto your spine.
Become girders and glass, stone and steel, so that when the world sees you, it
sees them.
And stand tall.
Stand tall.
Stand tall.
We need G'Kar to speak that.
But, another quote:
"There is a greater darkness than the one we fight; itis the darkness of the soul that has lost it's way. The war we fight is not against powers and principalities; it is against chaaos and dispair. Greater then the death of flesh is the death of hope.
"Against this peril we can never, ever, surrender."
I do not think the main reason the US has had terrorist is the of freedoms this country has. It is most likly US foreign policy or something along those lines. But the truth is always somewhere in the middle.
• OK, why do people hate America?
it IS because of what we stand for, freedom of speech, equal rights, etc.
your example of re-writing history was pathetic. U-571 was a hollywood movie, our government has NO say as to what is in a movie.
your example of us going to war over the attacks on our soil was also quite pathetic. We tried to get the Taliban to hand over the terrorist, or assist us in any way. They flat out refused. We went in and fixed that. What woiuld have happened if we didn't do that? they would have attacked us again, and again, and again. and most likely other nations as well. THAT is what would have happened. instead of 3000 dead it would have been in the tens of thousands.
I will admit, we are highly involved in other nations. to do otherwise would be isolationistic (Is that a word?)
however, we go around providing finacial support, food, medical help, etc to other nations. we don't try to control them!
and us going around saying a country has nukes and bio weapons. let me give you a little history.
Saddam lost the gulf war, in the gulf war he was killing THOUSANDS of his own people. we went in and solved that problem. as a result, he agreed to allow U.N. investigators into his country to make certain he wasn't making weapons of mass destruction. Later on, in more recent years, he stopped allowing them in. what else are we supposed to think?
people like you drive me nuts, so if this seems a little harsh, I'm not really sorry at all. Flowers will NOT solve the worlds problems, as you seem to think. (Passive mode ON, yea, like THATS going to do anything).
And croxis, I actually agree with you about the revolution. the US government is getting a tad big for its breeches.
OK,
If the U.S Minded its own minded its own business from the start, the world would be a better place, and there would'nt be 3000+ people dead, as well.
you are 100% wrong here.
if the US stayed out of world affairs, the 3000 that died in the world trade center/planes would still be dead. Why? because, the ratical islamic groups HATE us, and just about everyone else. ANYONE in fact, that is not an islamic. Its in their beliefs "kill the infidel and Jews" or something to that extent. They would still have hated us because overall, we are a christen society (Including catholics, protestants, etc under christianity), and because of our freedoms. if we were isolationist, it wouldn't have made one BIT of difference, unless we were so far gone as to not allow people from other countrys INTO America.
(OK, post got a little longet then I intended, but I'll admit, you got me fired up here)
• I think it is the political foriegn policy, and a little bit of irony.. the US did train Bin Laden after all, and they did put people like Pol Pot and Saddam in power...
BUT
This is not the place for this conversation, if you want to debate or chew each other down for believing differently, do it elsewhere...
JackN started this topic to respect and honour those innocents that died, not debate why it happened.
So please respect JackN and those innocents that died, and leave this as a place of respect and rememberance.
Okay guys...enough is enough. This topic has gotten WAY off track. The purpose of this topic has been lost.
I'm going to delete a few of the posts that are not ON topic.
This is not the day to be debating this.
