nice shark...pretty shark....

My parent have a tradition of heading to the bahamas for labor day, to go spearfishing, etc.

anyhoo, my Dad noticed this nice shark in the water, not that unusal (my first trip there was about 1000 sharks in the water, in other words, you were literally surrounded by them at all times)

there was one minor exception, this was a larger then typical shark. (typically they are 5-10 ft) this one was 17-18 feet long.

Now, typically a shark will ignore ya, but one this big is enough to make anyone a little skittish, especially because they had just finished skinning a smaller reef shark (Meaning lots o blood in the water).

My dad did manage to get some pictures of this monster though. (Goto love waterproof digital cameras!)

Pretty neat eh? remember, this thing is 17-18 feet long, or about 6 meters long. those little fish on its dorsal fin and pectral fin are ramora BTW, about 12-18 inches long, for comparehsen).

  • I could be wrong, but I don't think hammerheads are known for attacking people.

    very nice shot though

You have to wonder what kind of screwed up evolutionary process could give a shark a head like that. Probably for better depth perception or something.

though its not completely understood, most scientific thought lies along the lines of the sharks head being shaped that way for the sharks electromagnetic sensory gear in the leading edge of its nose, so Biggles is sorta right... a big broad bar of sensors so the shark has better depth of field... but in another electromagnetic spectrum from light
  • That and it makes one more surface for manuvering.

In reference to Shadow Boxer's post: If you stuck a shark on the front of a space ship, do you get improved sensors?

Hammerheads do not usually attack people, but that pic is damn cool!

Actually, that brings up an interesting point. If you tried to surgically integrate a consious hammerhead into a ship's sensor grid, would it then attack you?

No, it'd go after all the little spacefish.
