Good space combat sims

Entil'ZhaEntil'Zha I see famous people
I'm looking for a good current space combat sim, I miss the old XvT stuff, and Wing Commander games, I had hopes that StarLancer would do, but it was just terrible, FreeLancer looks like it might be good, but depending on who you believe, its Q4 2002 or Q1 2003.

So if anyone has suggestions about some good ones, I'd be forever in your debt (or atleast until i forget about it)

I'll assume you've played Freespace 2, which is still the best space combat sim I've personally played.

Other than that, it's fairly dry these days.

  • I-War is extremly fun, It's also pretty hard. Both Freeespaces however seem to be exatcly what you are looking for.

Battlecruiser Millenium was good. i just have the demo unfortunately (the only copies i can find are at a store 60 miles away), but it's an all around good game.

but, as everyone else has said, Freespace and Freespae 2 are still the best.

I definitly think you'll enjoy freespace.

  • never played FS1, but Freespace 2 was great fun for a month or so. it got soooo many things right. length of missions, the plot, etc.
I mean, it took me a long time to beat the game, it was HUGE! (3 disc) so few games give you along of gameplay time. (Half Life, and FS2 are two examples of how games SHOULD be).

JediKnight II was great fun, had a typical SW plot, but seriously, you can play the whole thing though in a day. in HL or FS2 ther ewould be NO WAY you could beat the whole thing in one day (Even if you cheat in HL, its just too long).

but, I've begun to rant I guess....

    FREESAPCE 2 ROCKS.

... with a good story, pirating and 'a little bit trading' (although I didn't used it very much). The player can decide for himself when the story should continue.
Also many incredible mods are out there/in progress for this game. Btw the graphic engine is very fine, too.

Entil'Zha, have you tried X-Wing Alliance? It's a little bit more like the classic space sims X-Wing/TIE-Fighter (steering, GUI) where you got awards for flying missions, with detailed statistics ... and a great last battle against the Death Star . Also there exists a X-Wing Alliance Upgrade which offers enhanced ships for this game.

FreeLancer looks promisingly, too although playing it was a little bit annoying due to the unusual controlling for a space sim.

Yeah i've played Xwing Alliance, I liked all the x-wing games, those were the first games that we played on a Lan on the T1 at work back when Dialup was all there was, Heh
  • Definatly Freespace 2 (with max FSAA on a modern system, it still looks great).

I-War 2 is VERY good, and we have a forum that is on par with this one in terms of community. Huge mod options, including some GREAT B5 stuff, Buda 5 v2 and all of that.

I-war 2 is now rerelased as a budget title, so you should be able to dig up a copy for $10 max, and it's more than worth that! And come join us on the forum there if you're interested.
