I recall something in the news recently that wasn't so positive for Ben and Jerry's, and Fruitopia both also "socially responsible" companies. Something about artificial flavors, preservatives, and supporting less than respectable causes.
I personally refuse to eat B&J ice-cream because I don't agree with some of the causes they give money to. Thank god for free markets and Baskin Robins!
I don't think it's the place of business to contribute money. In the end all they look for is tax sheltering. The business of business is to make money, and if "goodwill" makes you more money so be it. However, if the donations are to help the “bleeding heart” of the owner perhaps he should just employ more people or increase wages and let them/I decide what the best causes are.
He should stop printing the info, lower the price of his cereal, and maybe even more people could afford it. Lord knows ten dollars for a box of popped rice is absurd enough here in the US, why should I choke on a little “newsletter” from the likes of Kellogs.
In addition, why not modernize the plant. People will have to be employed to build and maintain the machinery. With those kinds of jobs in demand it will force the government to add better school systems for the local Samoans. Once again it would lower the price of the cereal so more could afford it, other goods that compete with cereal (pop tarts etc) would have to lower their prices to compete with the cereal. People could spend their money on other things… it’s like rolling a snow ball down a hill…
What if this guy isn’t the nice guy he seems to be. He could be holding back his workers in manual labor/remedial jobs at low pay so he maintains control over them. He likes employing several at lower pay because it means there are more to control, and lives dependant on him. He has power over them, the rest of the world will progress to technical and thinking jobs leaving these people behind still dependant on him. Is the pay good enough that the workers can afford to send their kids to higher education, I doubt it.
Saying that paying more people lower wages is better than employing less at higher wages is like saying, companies should move their high playing low employing robotic plants in the US to sweat shops in Asia to produce Nike Shoes, because the sweat shops will employ and help more people.
Yes, He might be a “nice guy”, but he could also be a snake in the grass on a power trip.
It makes your milk turn purple. That's the only cool upside of it.
Konrad ya gotta have faith...
so what this guy is offering isnt total Nirvarna... the guy has a holiday house and a few trappings of traditional success, his buisness practises are not totally selfless but he's doing a pretty good job by all accounts. You have to believe in some people, give em a go and have some optimisim. Hedge your bets perhaps, but in the end you gotta have faith that some people genuinely do give a rats arse about the community.
Be careful mate... or you are going to look obstructionist in your cynisim.
As far as labour intensive companies ? Good Idea... most of Asia went the high tech robot way... and there economies are now dead in the water... India.. on the other hand.. builds railways by hand, with 1800's technology... and while they arent exactly first world... they're doing pretty well with a humungus population.
Ben&Jerry's have artificial ingredients in the stuff they put in the ice cream, like Heath bars and stuff. People want Heath bars in their ice cream, you give them Heath bars. You don't make your own all-natural version of Heath bars because they wouldn't taste the same. Go pick on GE, which has been advertising the greatness of their clean up efforts without mentioning that they fought having to clean up their mess for years...

Is that the Hubbards one?
And yes, it is rather tasteless.
