I just received an email from a Web Hosting service at Reliable Webhosting.
The email shows 1000Mb (1Gig) Web Space, 5 Gig Bandwidth, PHP4 support, SSI, full CGI-Bin, 2 POP3 Email accounts, Website Access Stats, OC3 connection, etc...
All for the low price of $9.99 a month...
Think you could adjust your hosting plans for home.firstones.com to meet or come close to that? I'd pay the $10 a month in a heart beat!
I'd pay it in full for a year too right up front!

I could really use 1 Gig in static web space for all the various things I do. I'm not an FTP freak or anything, but I have a lot of content that I desire to make available publicly at some point.
So you must understand that a $10 month 1 Gig site with large bandwidth capabilities is very appealing...
I'd still support Firstones in whatever way I can, regardless of what I do...
#1) Many who claim to have OC3's are distorting the truth severly. Telcos normally provision fiber for any kind of tech company these days, which they then pipe T1's over. SO yes you have an OC3 cable but you get T1 bandwidth over it. Real OC3 bandwidth generally costs $45-$120k a month, that requires alot of $8-$10 customers and that doesnt cover rent, support/sales staff, network admin, phones, redundant links, etc etc.
Sit down Jack, because this might shock you. Many companies claiming broadband capability are using DSL. Do you want your mission critical business ecommerece site on a Covad DSL [that can go down weeks at a time?].. I thought not.
#2) Support: Support takes 2+ hours to get a hold of anyone if you need help or have a question.. Why? try paying $30-$60k for a prof support rep when your customers are paying you a lousy $8/mo for service.
#3) Overcrowding: When your charging rock bottom prices, only 1 way to make real money... volume. You must oversell your bandwidth that borders on an isp mandate otherwise your wasting bandwidth, but when you only charge $8 you need to pack those customers in big time.
#4) Do these el cheapo companies do BGP4 routing with multiple pipes to minimize downtime and fail over? Probably not...
The shame is, my company does a fair # of $10 sites but those are for small companies I KNOW will never exceed 1GB, so I give them a cheap rate and do not worry about it. But it would only take 1 success story to swamp me and make it very unprofitable.
#5) Hidden penalities, notice the first link you provided has NOWHERE on their site what the price per GB is if you exceeded quota for the month. Some companies *cough* Earthlink *cough* hit you with SEVERE penalities for going over quota, which is where they make back all their money. [Kinda like cellphone plans], so your golden as long as you stay within the limits, otherwise time to "Bend over" [pardon the expression].
I guess for the most part, its a "You get what you pay for" situation IMHO.

The company, Reliable Web Hosting, uses a strategy called “overselling”. Basically, a company who uses this strategy literally oversells what they have to offer to the public. This deceives a potential customer into thinking they are getting a lot of “bang for their buck”.
Bandwidth is not cheap. Quality bandwidth (which we use) is about $2.00-$4.00 per gigabyte. Cogent bandwidth is anywhere from $0.75 to $1.50 per gigabyte (cheap, but
some a few routing problems). Now, for them to offer 5 gigabytes for $9.95, they would be giving everything else for free. They “claim” a OC-3 connection, but I just ran a trace route. The results are as shown:

Pretty bad eh? This was performed from my RoadRunner Cable connection in Houston, Tx at 7:19 pm CST on July 28, 2002. If you wait, I’ll run one from my office tomorrow morning (using a multi-megabit DSL connection) and post the results too. :P
If you notice that at Reliable Web Hosting they do not publicly have a “Terms of Service Agreement”, any policies regarding usage, or even an “Acceptable Use” policy. A person can easily get screwed because they don’t know the policies of the company.
Another thing is the support. They offer a form to fill out for support. What if the server is down? You can’t fill out a form since it’s down! We have both a toll-free number and an emergency pager for any problems that occur anytime of the day or night.
Remember, you get what you pay for. Companies like this use volume and very little personal service to make profit.

Okay, here’s an example:
Company XYZ offers a plan for $10.00 that includes:
2 gigabytes of space
5 gigabytes of bandwidth
They lease a dedicated server for $100.00 per month. The server has a 20 gigabyte hard drive in it and about 50 gigabytes of bandwidth allotted to it each month.
This company would have to sell 10 of these plans just to break even! They would have already filled up the server and not have gained a single dollar of profit.
They could easily over sell, maybe stick 20 accounts on it, and hope the majority doesn’t utilize what has been “promised” to them.
This is what basically most hosts do.

Thank you...

Now, how about a 4th plan which offers 300-500 megs web space, and a few gigabytes of bandwidth?

$10-$15 a month?
Cheers!
For anything like that, we would refer you to our site, radiusco.com, and let you pick through the plans available. A portion of the money would go to firstones.com.
EDIT: To clarify, I was referring to Jack's post above mine about space. Sanfam has stated he doesn't want to offer that much to the public for hosting under firstones.com. I've worked out a deal to help solve his problem on that end.

Good evening! What I have posted is facts regarding the industry.
I don't care if you go with us or not for web hosting. However, I hate to see good people throw money away at "cheap" companies. Some of the things I posted were examples (including the one I mentioned our company in).
Now, I can easily recommend about a dozen honest and reliable web hosting providers out there that won't "break your wallet". If you want, I can do that for you. Not all companies "oversell". The more reputable ones do not use this policy though. It's mainly the "fly by night" hosts (yes, these do exist) and the cheap, features-rich hosts that follow this. Remember, you do get what you pay for...this is pretty much law in the web hosting industry. =)
It's all about competition. RadiusCo Web may not be the cheapest...and we are not the highest.
It's up to the consumer to pick a host based on their needs.

Striker, what is your position in the company and what is your job(besides drum up business from us)? I am just curious as to what a company like that intitles (just looking for something interesting to read).
Well, officially I am President of the company.
My job is basically to run the day-to-day operations of the company. I do all the billing and sales. Also, I maintain the web site (for the most part).
My partner maintains the servers and takes care of most of the support problems. He posts on the board sometimes. In fact, he made a post about helping out on Firstones.Com’s bandwidth.
“I am just curious as to what a company like that intitles (just looking for something interesting to read)”
I’m confused as to what the above means. Could you clarify?
My sole goal was to help out JackN in his decision for a web hosting provider. I will list a few web hosts that, in my opinion, are very honest and respectable.
- MCHost - best private label service out there! http://www.mchost.com/
- Voxtreme – excellent plans for the price. They do not oversell at all. They are able to offer those prices because they buy in bulk. http://www.voxtreme.com/
- Vortech – yet another great company http://www.vortechhosting.com/
I am not trying to “flame”, discredit, or hurt any company. It may seem that I am “biased”, but I am just telling you the facts about the industry as I have worked in it for over 2 years. I’m not putting down other companies in order to gain your business. My goal was to simply state the facts out there that the average consumer may not know about.
It’s up to JackN to select a company. I will offer my advice and guidance on helping him select a good host. Like I said earlier, I don’t mind if he doesn’t choose us. I just want to see that people get a good host for their money. I’ve seen many companies just “shutdown”, literally overnight, and never come back (leaving the consumer high and dry after taking their money). This type of business makes everyone look bad in the hosting industry.
Please feel free to e-mail me about anything relating to web hosting. I will do my best to help you to the best of my knowledge. Thank you and good night!

Good Evening to you also! You answered my question fine. What I meant is what you have to set up, when you started your company, how large it is, ect. Only post if you have the time. If I was to buy space (not likely, but possible) I would buy it from you just to support another "member". Plus, prices dont seem too bad to me, since all I would use is something very small.
