Damn I would like one of ATI's Radeon9700 when it's relised in september!! Well, a link to where you can findout how good it is! http://www.anandtech.com/video/showdoc.html?i=1656&p=1

Will the .13 NV30 that comes out 4 months later beat it?
Will the stupid hot pink color blind you?
OOOh, the suspense.
Sorry, I just don't like ATI's cards, and I'm not going to spend $400 on one. They've never worked right for me. That and it's a DX9 part..and just look at all of the DX9 games that are on the shelves! Oh..wait..DX9 isn't even OUT yet!
Assuming I have the money (which is an unknown because I am moving away to school) I'll wait until the spring to upgrade any part of my system at this point. Then the Radeon 10billion will be out, as well as the NV35..both will be mature parts by then and we'll see if the drivers for either card are good and stable at that point. And they'll probably be using DDR II.
But, yes, it's specs and benchmarks are impressive, and for the moment they are the fastest..this leapfrog game of every 3 to 4 months is insane.

I'm hoping their unified drivers will fix some of the problems. ATI's hardware has always been incredible. This is clear to anyone who looks into the matter. The components are better, the quality of the output is better, and they just work better. But the drivers are terrible. They are often incompatible with 3d applications and games, and have memory management problems.
But we've seen what happens when ATI makes a driver set well. Look at the huge performance boost the Radeon 8500 had after the updated drivers! I'm sure even more gaming goodness could be pulled from the card were the software powering it improved.
Hopefully the R9700 will perform well. And I'm sure nVidia has an ace up its sleeve. Whether this is a driver upgrade or a new chip/manufacturing process, we will find out. But I'm sure they have not been unaware of this coming.
BTW-now might be the time to get a 4600, I bet the price on em drops.
The unified driver set was going to be the solution to so many problems! Instead of making a driver for each card, one set would be needed. More resources could be diverted to the development of this single driver set, and thus would result in more driver releases of better quality.
Also, there are always problems. You can't have flawless drivers, especially for a pre-release ATi card. I'll investigate this further when I have the time. But it could be that ATi has once again rigged the drivers for the expected tests. They did it in the past. I've lost my trust in ATi.
Also, the card they got was a super good chunk of silicon, ATI has not yet decided on the final clock rate but the one they got was 325...and that seemed to be the optimistic edge of the speed range...I hate it when they hand pick and overclock a card like that for the reviews.
Yes, they are dropping the current unified core for the 9700 and are now going to start over. Maybe a good thing, but you can bet that in traditional ATI style they will now stop supporting the older cards completely. Ask anyone who has an OEM ATI card, espcially a mobile one with TV out features..one of my friends has one in his laptop, and there are no drivers/utils for XP that enable the TV out. ATI just says "it's up to the OEM to write it"..and yet Nvidia still supports cards that are 3 or 4 years old with new drivers that work in the latest OS...
ATi has some great stuff, but the management just seems to terrible. They've got their priorities all wrong.

An MX maybe..although they don't have pixel shaders..

The card has really great potential. Visual quality is astounding, the feature set is remarkable. It really could be overclocked very nicely, too. Once the drivers are given a tune-up, It shoudl give a GF4 a run for its money.
The Matrox Parahelia's problem IMO is the clock speed. But I would really like the surround gaming.

Tests show the chip *can* be Overclocked very well. It runs relatively cool for what it does. Matrox, IMHO, has a winner.
Let's hope they can take advantage of that winner then.

nVidia's lasting support comes from the detonator drivers. The unified architecture is what makes it easier to support both old and new. .
Isn't the NV30 going to be a lot of 3dfx tech? If so, I don't expect them to use Detonators for it.

Try the Radeon 8500le at newegg for about 95$. A small clock adjustment to retail speeds and it's neck and neck with the GF4 4200, a card a generation ahead of it. It's the best bang for the buck right now and the new Catalyst drivers are turning out to be as good as NVidias.

It's not like they'll just leave the chips on there, 3dfx labels and all. I'm sure they've made a variant of their own which works pretty well in comparison and will be compatible with their drivers.

The question is wether the drivers will push it to it's potential, after all, it's not just a core shrink and clock increase like the last few have been for the most part.
The NV30 should be a great card like the R300 is turning out to be. Will it be the leap over the R300 that the R300 is over the GF4? Who knows, and for now, it doesn't matter.
