Imperium galactica demo...wow.

The demo was released just a little while ago and visually,it's absolutely stunning, with ships that have tons of detail and sheild and weapon effects that are in a class by themselves...Puts anything we've seen so far to shame...

System requirements are steep though, they recommend a p3 ghz with a gf2 DDR and the optimal setup is a 1.5 ghz cpu running a matrox parhelia or similar DX8 card, but i ran it with an ATI 8500 128 meg and it's smooth as glass..

Think of the game as a graphically updated version of Homeworld(3D RTS) and once you start the game it'll run a scripted battle squence, which can be interupted at any time, that looks amazing to say the least...

Anyways,enough babling...Here's the link

    The movie mode rocks...

No idea what to do when i get into the demo mode though.... I dont even know how to move!
  • All the instructions are in the readme file...

Btw...which video card did you run the demo with?...I'm asking since the devs seem to insist that only the matrox card can right the demo properly...

Can you imagine playing it with 3 monitors though(it can be enabled via the options menu)...would be quite a show... .

    65 Megs... ouch....
  • True...65 megs is a large download if you're still using a modem,but compared to demos like america's army(210 megs btw),it's a walk in the park... .

But it's worth it...If you liked homeworld, you'll flip on this demo...just the detail on the ships is amazing, looks like the devs are using environmental bumpmapping quite extensively and the particle effect trails from ships engines and missiles are absolutely awsome....

And here though that independence war 2's engine looked good(which it does of course)....

If the gmaplay matches the visuals once the the full game is released,we're in for a treat... .

It's neat, the use of bumpmapping is very nice. I don't think the controls are as easy as homeworld, but then again there is no tutorial level.

As far as not running on anything but a matrox, that is complete bs. The parhelia has nothing special other than 3 monitor support, a $400 price tag, and the performance of a $200 video card. It runs extremely well on my GF4 ti 4600, and I hope the full version allows for higher than 1024x786 res.

    65MB? That's nothing these days.

I'll be the first to agree that overall the matrox card isn't the best value around when it comes to gaming if you compare it to the competition in that aspect alone, but if you consider that matrox's previous cards(G 450 and 550) were nothing but die shrinks of the venerable G400 card, which was released when DX6 was considered cutting edge,it's actually quite a nice leap for them, from a technology standpoint ...

And there is at least a couple of other features in the parhelia that no other card can touch...One is 16x edge AA,which is way better in terms of visual quality than any other method of antialiasing currently used in any other video card on the market right now...

The other is the ability to process 16 textures total,4 per pixel pipeline, which is actually a requirement for DX9 level cards as well as displacement mapping, also a DX9 requirement....

The only thing missing in the card for full DX9 certification would be integrating pixel shaders 2.0,which the main difference is that the new version uses floating point calculations but eat up a ton of die space in the process.

That's one of the reasons why Nvidia is waiting for TSMC to start producing chips at 0.13 micron so that they can integrate all DX9 features in the NV30 while keeping the size of the GPU relatively small and hopefully affordable, especially since it's CEO has gone on the record as saying that the chip will have nearly 120 million transistors, which would make for one huge, power hungry, expensive gpu if they decided to make it at 0.15 micron...

Anyways....The main thing that really ended up lowering parhelia's performance compared to ati and nvidia's cards is the relatively low clock speed that the core operates at compared to the competition(220 vs 300 mhz in the TI 4600),at equal core speeds between both cards,it would be a much tighter race for sure...Add ot that killer 2d display quality, always a strong point with matrox cards, which other cards have yet to match...

    As for IG3, I got a 750 MHz Duron with Geforce 2 MX. I think I'm screwed...

The game seems to run smoothly enough; however, it hard freezes when I play the demo mission more than once...
