ok, so i built this computer and i'm trying to load windows onto it. But, whenever i put in the cd i get a "invalid system disk" error. I made a boot disk and i get the same error. Then i went and put the hdd in this and installed 2k.. then put it back in the other to see if it'd work... "missing ntldr" d'oh. Any idea's? Someone said dvdroms dont work for booting. But then the floppy isnt working either.

Sounds to me like your CD/DVD drive is not set as the boot device. make sure that it is set as your first boot device, not the harddrive.
• Booting from a DVD is not a problem....do it all the time...

Definitely sounds like Boot drive in CMOS is the problem. It might not say DVD as the Boot choice but you can select the ATAPI CD-ROM choice even though you have a DVD-ROM.

Should work no problem...

Yep, hate to be repetitive, but I have to say that should do the trick. I had some problems with my first home built computer with a cdrom.

And just incase your DVD-ROM isn't bootable (it should be though), then grab about four floppies and do the following:

Get the setup floppy for whatever previous version of Windows you had. Insert the floppy and start the computer. Let it boot from the floppy and then hit select "Start the computer with CD-ROM support". Once it finishes what its doing, stick your windows 2000 CD in and goto the BOOTDISK directory. Run Makeboot.exe. Insert a blank floppy disk when it calls for it. Once you're done, insert the first floppy and reboot. Then follow the on-screen instructions. Same procedure goes for WinXP as well.

Try changing the boot disk or using another computer to make the disk.

I had the same problem with my computer, porbablty twice if memory serves, but the system worked ok when I used another booty made with another comp, and also when I used my old Win95 boot disk.

Strange, but I think I concluded that it has something to do with the FAT formats of the disk that the Windows makes when it created the floppys.

I might just as well have made up that thing to prevent myself from thinking that my comp's jinxed. So if that's impossible, feel free to correct me.

If you get that after installing windows, then I've had that problem. To fix it, I booted up with a DOS boot disc and ran fdisk to remove the partition I was installing on. Then I installed windows again. That fixed it.

you might also want to do a low-level format. Believe me when I say it works wonders.

The second linked page should have a link or two to the download locations of a really, really great program. I'd suggest getting the starter edition, as it has all that's needed with no excess. Not only does it do low-level formats, but it has a *gasp* JUMPER DATABASE, meaning it has the jumper diagrams for almost every hard drive known to man. It's godly. the usefulness of the program made itself clear when I tried to LLF a hard drive from way back when. No manual, and the internet was out for servicing. so I ran the disk and checked. Voila, it worked!

Sounds like you've got a dying FDD then. Switch it out with another and see if it'll work.
