Correct me if I am wrong but burning wood generates CO not CO2 right?
CO2 is generated by living animals
CO is generated by cars, and other fuel burning processes.
So if correct, then burning forests has a double impact, depriving the rest of the Earth of a "Natural CO2 Scrubber", and generating that all important emission called Carbon Monoxide (CO).
People point a lot of fingers at the US and it's emissions, but seldom take note that the US and Canada reserve some of the largest pieces of Forest Land from total destruction for the sake of progress.
BigglesThe Man Without a Face
Jack: Actually, whether burning something produces CO or CO2 depends mainly on the quantity of oxygen available in the area in which said something is burning. If you burn it in an oxygen deprived area, it is more likely to produce CO, whereas oxygen rich is more likely to produce CO2. This is also to do with cleaner flames. A blue flame when burning methane comes from burning it with ample oxygen. A yellow flame is dirty and contains unburnt carbo because of a lack of oxygen. Similar principle.

Not many serious scientists doubt the existence of global warming or the fact that it is caused at least in part by pollution.
The fact that you can find scientists who question this does not prove it is wrong. That is the nature of science: to question everything. You will always find a scientist to argue the contrary position to anything.
That the US did not at least participate in the Kyoto treaty talks is reprehensible. King George II has made many missteps in these early days of his admin. Let's hope he does better in the future.
In spite of his poor record on the environment (or maybe because of it) several states have already pushed legislation to enforce parts of the Kyoto accord even though the US didn't sign it.
There are people in the US who do care...

Actually, what surprises me even more is the fact that there are still those few scientists left that seriously believe that the recent small-scale signs global warming and the small rises on the ocean surface levels etc. are simply due to natural temperature fluctuations of the good ol' globe.

Sorry for not posting for so long. It's been so long I've had to reread all my old posts. Yeesh... Okay, I was originally going to go on a drunken tirade but - an thank your lucky stars - I decided to play "Arcanum" instead, or as I like to call it "Stupid-Pompus-@$$-English-1800s-stereotypes-RPG" <--jeuvenile but accurate. Then I decided it just wouldn't be me to leave a loose thread untied or go one week without being a royal pain so here I am! Well okay, you wanted it, yer gonna get it. To outline this community's two biggest f*ck ups and how they pertains to *YOU* I have chosen two major incidents depicting the FirstOnes community and what it implies: the formulaic shtuff too numerous and too minor to remember (but I'll try). I'll start with the major incidents: here goes...
Major Incidents
---------------
ACTUALLY, I guess you wouldn't consider the first incident that of the FirstOnes community seeing as how the mods.FirstOnes are considered separate, and I'm lazy. The second is definitely our problem though: WoH (Week of Hell). To go over the event for those who weren't present, three or our members (two FirstOnes authorities and a serial number) went to another board (a member there was also in on it) and started three threads* based on Aardvarks, Vorklifts, and what-have-you as a joke. For the most part, people of that board just said "what the hell" and "stop"; however there was one member that thought it an opportunity to spam the FirstOnes Forum under the pretense of being offended. FirstOnes, ignorant of the situation at the time, immediately started requesting this person stop. He/she/it did and stated the above pretense. The spammer laid the evidence out, i.e. everyone could look over the threads in the other forum and the spam in ours and come to their own conclusions.
Many people came to the conclusion that what our members did wasn't very smart but what the guy in the other forum did was childish and over-extended. Some others came to the conclusion that what our members did was equally questionable to what the spammer did if not more so. And yet others came to the conclusion that the act perpetrated by the members of this board was not merely an afront to the members of the other board, NO, but to the very members of this board too! An act of disrespect and ill-regard bringing shame to the forum! One even punishable by banishment and complaints to the user's ISP! (as one was so eager to point out) The people who came to this conclusion started more than five topics on this subject*. This after the "insurgents" had already posted sincere apologies in the threads concerning this whole kaffufle, including that of the spammer's own explanation.
To conclude, why did I even type this? Oh yeah! They say this is coo! and that it's a nice place to chill. Well, I guess that's true... most of the time. Someone else said B5 communities tend to be thoughtful and intelligent. Well, I guess this case doesn't count cause the net-world scenario depicted above pretty much illustrates, in significant proportion, brutish intolerance and the 'will of the swarm' but that's just my opinion.
Formulaic Shtuff and Conclusion
-------------------------------
So what does any of the above have to do with my latest postings in this thread concerning a "restrictive" environment and such and such? Well, if we analyze what happened in the Week of Hell and ask why the wolves among us came to the conclusions they did, regardless a tendency to be over emotional and self-righteous (like me), then we can find why they felt three topics in a forum, they never even heard of, brought them desperate shame. The conclusion I came to was this, given the information I retain: we, as a community, are VERY self-conscious and worry about what outsiders think. Why? I don't know. In my mind, to actually expect anyone else but a B5 fan to take more than an infintesimal of this forum's activity seriously is preposterous but there you are anyway. And in the wake of this consciousness lay different meanings behind the words we use in our posts than would, say, that of SpaceBattles or Penny-Arcade (forums without this consciousness) simply because, language is metaphorical. What can we do about it? Hell if I know all the answers** but I think we would be more "coo!" and be a better place to "chill" if we just didn't give a shit whether anyone in a $2000 office chair was taking notes. Of course this is just one duck's view...

Do you remember when we were trying to save a game? THIS was the place where publishers would come to lurk and find out about the community. We HAD to watch ourselves. We HAD to look good to them and the rest of the world. But that time is passed. Societies are like glacier, they can't change cource just like that. It takes TIME for things to change. And yes, we do need to combine the mod and main forums together. What happened to that program DG was working on?
But if you did in fact read my post, then what was the point of it? Well, since I guess I didn't make it clear: it was we're better off NOT caring whether we are being looked at, even if we are. Any publisher or business type looking in will only really be jaunted if there are topics littered all over the place containing swear words in the topic heading. That's when we should do something. Otherwise, we create the aforementioned "tense" and "restrictive" atmosphere which most publishers aren't going to pay much attention to or probably even notice but most of the people here or thinking to join will...

But isn't it about taking pride in your own appearance? It is more to do with how you see yourself than how others see you. However, to do that you have to decide on a standard and then live up to it or exceed it. I didn't see anything of this week of hell you mentioned but I assume that much of the distress was a result of loss of pride in the community rather than any real concern that a suit might notice a minor squabble?
