How much do you know about comparitive law? The most fundamental principle of American criminal procedure "Innocent untill proven guilty" is lacking in europe, you are very much guilty untill you prove your innocence. In europe you are universaly garunteed trial, but not a jury trial or even constitutionaly gaurnteed the right to council.

In England you are Innocent until proven Guilty, this is the basis upon which everything is build. You are always allowed council. On minor crimes you have the right to chose between trial by jury or judge alone. Serious crimes are always before a jury. In Europe the plea bargain court system does not exist.
I really didn't want to get into an argument over this, if you're defending America out of a sense of patriotism then I deeply respect that. Believing and caring in something greater than ones self, be it a country, ideal, or religion, can only be a good thing. I was just genuinely upset about America's betrayal of the Kioto agreement.
As for America: First missile defence, then Kioto, and now Germ Warfare. Time and time again the Bush administration is turning its back on international opinion. America is the richest and most powerful country in the world (perhaps in history), it can do what ever it wants as no one can stop them. Isolationism, however, has never been good for an empire, and when married with arrogance it has often lead to disaster. Look that up in one of your history books...

This is half the truth (although I don't believe this half) -- you conceal that there is indeed evidence for the greenhouse effect (apart from it being a logical model).
What do you propose? To sit and wait until we know it's too late? These climate changes are taking place (unfortunately slowly enough for us to close our eyes if we want hard enough, and not exactly in the regions/countries where they are caused) right now.
It has been told often enough: Earth is capable of controlling climate changes to a certain extend -- but this capability is as well hurt very badly in the course of those changes. If it "breaks apart" -- we will not be able to do anything about it. Then it will be to late. You can hurt your body with tiny stitches -- which number will your body be able to heal itself? We don't know. Would you really like to try it?

As for jurisdiction in Europe versus the USA... I am not an expert (and so I can't discuss jurisdiction history with you) but you are wrong (wonder how good your books are, after all). DsDetective pointed it out for England... you are guilty only if proven so in Germany, too.

Want to know something really cool?
[rant mode]
The Earth has existed for approximately 4 billion years, as far as we can tell.
Humans have been around for about 40,000 years, once again as far as we can tell. Existing records only go back about 4,000 years.
We have been here for 1/100000th of the time the Earth has existed.
We know shit all about how it really works! We can't say anything for sure! We have rather good theories, but we can't prove anything conclusively because we simply haven't been around long enough. Global warming is just one of these things. There is evidence that says we have caused the CO2 content of the atmosphere to climb rapidly in the last 50 years. But there is also a shitload of evidence that says that the Earth follows cycles. If you want, I can go into great detail about the dozens of known factors that effect the temperature on the surface of the Earth. The system is far far to complex for us to understand perfectly, especially at this extraordinarily young age for our race. I'm not saying that global warming is our fault, I'm not saying it isn't. What I am saying is that we cannot prove it one way or the other. Not without another few dozen thousand years of experience at least.
This does not mean we should just sit back and light the coal fires. I think we should definitely cut the levels of emissions that we make. We should definitely take far more care of our environment. But we shouldn't kill off our way of life and our civilisation just to stop something that we don't even know we can stop.
Personally, I believe that global warming is just a part of how the planet operates. It happens. At the most all we can do is speed it up a tiny bit.

“There's a nine out of ten chance that global average temperatures will rise between three and nine degrees Fahrenheit over the coming century, with a four to seven degree increase most likely, according to a new probability analysis by scientists in the United States and England. The most likely projected increase is five times greater than the one degree temperature rise observed over the past century.”
“Global climate change is linked to the accumulation in the atmosphere of six gases that trap the Sun's ray's close to the Earth's surface. These gases are emitted by the burning of coal, oil and gas.”
“If greenhouse gases are not limited and global warming does occur, Raper and Wigley says it would be almost impossible to reverse. If a rapid warming and its expected impacts occur in the near future, even swift societal attempts at control would yield little immediate success, say they write. "The climate's inertia would lead to only a slow response to such efforts and guarantee that future warming would still be large.”

You and Sanfam ought to read my earlier posts whilst reflecting on the history of this board. I'm not saying we're ALWAYS messed up. I wouldn't be here giving my two cents if that were the case. I'm saying there are things we could do now that we have not done in the past to prevent the negative events that may befall this board. Also take note that the "restrictiveness" spoken of doesn't necessarily stem from one source nor does it appear as such when you are not on the receiving end.

Thing is, we don't know what the future holds for us, let alone a forum. There is no way we can prepare for every single thing that could go wrong on this forum. We (as in the community) have to take it in stride. There will always be someone doing things, just for the sake of making things worse on everyone else. What are we going to do, shut down the boards so that won't happen? Things like that are why we have moderators. Their job is to keep the peace. You just have to have faith in their ability to do so.

About all this talk of CO2 emissions, I just want to give my 2 cents...
Rush Limbaugh {ducks in bomb shelter for mentioning his name, if the people here don't like Bush they HATE him...} was on one day talking about the data that a satalite had recorded and he'd found (or some listener had sent to him). It's on the NASA site, if I remember correctly, if you want to check it.
Anyway, the data showed that forest fires in South America produced much, much higher concentrations of CO2 than the US did.......
Of course.
Burning wood always releases CO2, but their situation is even grimmer. -Every chopped down wood reduces the amount of natural "air filters", which harvest the CO2 out of the air, making the air even more polluted on the long run.
The thing is, that wood is the primary energy source for the people burning those forests, plus in order to get food, they need the space of the cut-down forests for cultivation (what the heck is that word? Anyways, growing food, farming & such) of the land. Unlike the US, they don't have a choice. The US could move into using less polluting methods of energy creation, simply because they can and it's a question of economy and finance, not life & death.
Just my 2 cents.

Life is full of surprises. The ones reserved for me usually come wearing brass knuckles.

This place is about as restrictive as a web cardboard box. Thats why I like it here. I can actually RELAX and not worry about stepping on anyone's toes. People actually take a joke for what it is....A JOKE!

Same here. The only place I can think of that is less restrictive is space battles, and I avoid that place like the plague.

I personally can't think of any problem with our mentality.

And I still don't see how we're restrictive.
I've read through the thread, I can't see any examples of what it is you are referring to. Can you post an example of what it is you have in mind (preferably something the folks here are likely to remember too), explain how it was dealt with at the time and suggest how it should have been dealt with.
