Server Downtime! *ALL READ*
I sent this e-mail to Drazi a few days ago. I hope he informed everyone. If not, I'll post it here just in case.
=======================================
Good Day:
I just wanted to give you a heads up on what's happening with the web server that currently hosts your site. We will be switching internet service providers at the end of the month and discontinuing our leased server at our present provider. Currently, I am building a new server to be co-located in a Network Operations Center (NOC) in Baltimore, Maryland. The server will be connected to an OC-48 line to 3 major backbone providers. We are doubling the RAM to 256 megabytes and adding a new 20 gigabyte hard drive. Also we have increased the processor speed from an Intel Celeron 400 mhz to a AMD Duron 750 mhz.
The server should be finished being built by Friday, June 22nd and it will be sent to our system administrator who will load all the required software. He will personally upload all your data to the new hard drive. There will be no loss of data. However, to accomplish this, we will have to turn off FTP to your site on Sunday, June 24th so we may begin uploading your data. This will allow us to upload files without any interruptions or complications. Around Thursday, June 28th or Friday, June 29th, the system administrator will send the server to Baltimore to be plugged into their NOC.
Your data will be copied, but your e-mail accounts and FTP passwords will not be. This is due to the way Linux is setup. We cannot just "copy" your logins over. Your usernames will be saved, but new passwords will be assigned. Once the new server is up and running, we will forward the passwords to the respective owners. E-mail accounts (except for the postmaster account) will all be deleted. We cannot copy that setup over. You will not lose any e-mail as it will be sent to the postmaster account. I suggest you notify your contacts of this and copy any and all addresses (i.e. mailing list info) from the server.
On Saturday, June 30th at 11:59 pm CST the old server will be turned off. I don't expect the new server to be up and running until July 2nd or 3rd due to the shipping time. We are looking at a downtime of approximately 3 to 4 days if everything goes as planned. We will be sending you your new DNS information for your domain if you own one. All sub-domain accounts will be carried over with the domains on which they reside on. This information will be sent within the next few days. That way, the domain will already be set for the new server.
All these new features should allow you to administer your site more efficiently. We will be introducing new features within the next few weeks that corresponds to the new server.

Hopefully the new server will provide us with an incredible service and a nice fast site.

I'll give you the specs on the old server and new server...so you can see the improvement.
Old:
Intel Celeron 400 mhz
128 megabytes of PC100 RAM
6.4 gigabyte HD
New:
AMD Duron 750 mhz
256 megabtes of PC133 RAM
3.2 gigaybte HD (system drive)
20 gigabyte HD (data drive)
Big improvement in my opinion. =)
It will be much faster, we will be on an OC-48 line instead of an OC-3 line.
And you were from a celeron?
Jeebus! (fun simpsons reference)
That is horrible. Next chance you get, move over to a Xeon.
Oh well, it still IS an improvement
Good ole CommuniGate, ya gotta love it...
Before you guys trash me on using WIN98 for the mailserver OS, It is easier to restore the server using WIN98 than SuSe. I can transfer the server info to a different server and be up in less than 5 minutes....Usually have to restart it once a week though...And my tape backup is a parallel interface that is not recognized by Linux....
I am eventually gonna move it to my AS/400 but I gots other projects going on at this time....
[This message has been edited by ZocaloHobo (edited 06-24-2001).]
it needs a better processor than that, IMHO.
Also, I'm not a big fan of Intel and I won't go to a Xeon. =)
If you look at the benchmark tests, a Duron 750 mhz outperforms most late model Pentium III chips....I'm not kidding.
Take a look at this link...quite interesting: http://www.amd.com/products/cpg/duron/comparison.html
Also, look at the benchmarks compared to a Intel Celeron: http://www.amd.com/products/cpg/duron/benchmarks/25044-04.html
A Duron is just a power efficent, cost effective alternative to an Athlon. That's why I chose it. =)
Therefore, a 400 mhz would have been sufficient for you.

Currently, AMDs chips are extremely fragile. They are known to crush easily, and also have a slight reputation for dealing out loads of heat. My experiences support these claims
On the other hand, Intels chips are lacking in the current .18 micron fabrication process. Once they switch over to the .13, things will improve, and intel should be able to make some amazing changes to the Pentium 4.

I'd go with an Athlon rather than a Duron, I"m running both an Athlon 850 and a Duron 750 here, the Duron has been very unreliable, I've been thinking of swapping it out with a spare celeron that i've got. since the celery 400 was much more reliable. HOWEVER, my Athlon (tbird) has been stable as anything, And the Athlon's are not that much more price wise than a duron.
Just to show i'm not Anti, Intel, in Addition to the TBird, the DUron and a K6-2/300 that i've got, i've also got a PII 350, a PII 266, a Celeron 400, and a PPC 250, (also have a PII 233, and a celeron 300 unused.)
So i've got no real Processor Bias, i'll use anything.
------------------
..And so it Begins
I haven't had any stability problems with my Duron650@918, though anything over 950 and it gets flakey..hey..try upping the Vcore and Vi/o on the Duron. It does make a difference.
Celerons are ok, but the lack of that cache smarts just a little.
My Intel PII-450 and my Intel PIII-800 are so reliable...
Some processors are lemons, and some motherboards make processors look like lemons...

In my opinion it is AMD all the way unless you want absolute assured reliability. AMD is especially good for people like us who build our own computers. I would prefer a TBird over a Duron for any machine of mine though.

Why pay more for a measely 5% performance difference! That right, 5 freggin percent! The only thing I'd trade off my Duron 700 for is a faster Duron. Durons overclock like crazy.
Just to irk the pro-intel folks, my Duron 700 spanks a p3 1GHz in memory benchmarks, and comes DAMN close in Multimedia and CPU benchmarks. (ref: SiSoft Sandra benchmark utility)

Try swapping them in the same system. If they both are stable in one system and not the other then there's a problem in the other one.

Already tried that, the stability problem follows the processor, sure it could be a bad processor. but i'll take the tbird instead. the duron is for my kid's machine

no chance of slipping in a nice Power PC 733 G4 then?

You can slip me that machine, I'd love to replace my PPC 250 with a G4 (just so i can run OSX) my mac is Dreadfully slow with os9 on ot, and i lost my OS8.5 disc, so i can either stick with slow OS9, or go back to 7.6.
Processor is prolly ok for os9, but its only got 32 megs of ram, and getting more ram for that machine isn't a priority at the moment.
------------------
..And so it Begins
I'm running OS X on a 9.1 scsi (7,200rpm) and its not bad. Video playback is not great with Quicktime 5 though, it jerks alot, even with my Radeon 32mb video card. I just got a new 41.1gig IBM ide drive to replace the old 4gig one, and X wouldn't install on one of the partitions I set up for it. It could see both partitions, but wouldn't select either of them. Yet it selected the scsi drive alright! Strange. Other than that, its a beautiful OS, and a nice change from 9.1.
I don't own a G4.... not yet anyway. I've been holding off since they came out. They're still too expensive, even with the education discount I can get, which amounts to roughly £100. Ok its better than nothing, but it doesn't blow you out of the water. Apple need to learn a bit of Dell in that sector.

och! 32mb running OS 9.... yeah that will be very slow. I've got 224mb in my G3 266, but I need more, so I'll probably get a 256 module soon, a PC 133 one for about £48 inc vat and delivery, which is realy good actually.

Yeah, most of my memory is in my PC's, since those are the machines i use most, my win2k box has 330 megs, FreeBSD box has 190, and the rest have 128.

You got that right, Jack.
I'm NEVER going to buy a motherboard with a VIA chipset on it EVER again. VIA so royally hosed AGP4x on the Apollo Pro133 chipset that I only just recently got AGP4x and My GeForce 2 GTS to like each other on my Asus P3V4X motherboard.
And the only reason that happened was because I used the Drivers Microsoft released in Win2K SP2, hacked the registry to bypass nvidia's "if you're using a VIA board shut off AGP4X" switch, and was fortunate enough to have a Creative card so I could use AGP Wizard to tweak the settings without rebooting.
(rant)
The VIA 4-in-1 drivers are total crap (in my severely biased opinion), and show that they really needed to spend more time reverse engineering Intel's AGP 4x specification. I still don't know what posessed me to try running Win2K without them, but I'm glad that I did.
Man, I can't wait for the new nForce Motherboards to come out...
(/rant)
Ok, I'll be quiet now

My experiences have shown the Via chipsets to be a true pain in the rear. I mean, I got one expecting great stuff, and I have recieved, but I am having so many compatibility issues. I've found many of the issues with my Radeon are actually related to the via chipset and the poor 4-in-1 drivers. The nForce will be a well accepted member of this household. I know I'm going to adopt it soon. This system has always been a test bed for new technology, though. I got the asus A7V quite early on, having the first revision BIOS and all. I also recently had an A7V spontaneously die on me, taking out the ram and video card, too. This led to a chain of events which some here know of, and will soon lead to a victory against negligent computer techie work.
:/
We'll see...
I'll be up the creek without a paddle if that one goes out...

Mac Servers are much more secure that PC servers, and with MacOS X server, you've got a great unix backbone to keep everything nice and stable. None the less, their numbers are small.... and they're bloody expensive!

I haven't had any visible trouble with my P3V4X, but then again I haven't even looked to see if it is using AGP4X or not. I don't want to risk it. But I have to say that VIA have been quite a dissapointment to me. I thought they were great until I actually got one of their boards. As soon as I can afford an nForce board, I'll be getting one.

I haven't had any specific trouble with the Via's, but they are not tops on my list.
